Coming along well!

Great to see my hometown finally get some meaningful info up on its Wiki page!  :) I wanted to suggest we put up some *brief* information about points of interest (parks, theaters, etc.).

I've heard that Coral Springs has been ranked in publications as one of the greatest place to bring up children. I haven't been able to confirm this. Can anyone confirm or deny this and find the proof?

The Demographics section needs a bit of a cleanup. Ideally, that would be formatting it to make it less initially mindboggling, but shortening it would work as well. I want to leave a bit of time for someone to do the first before I do the second. Blue Crest 03:46, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Relative to most any other city in the Country, kids are so safe in Coral Springs that they find it cool and exciting to pretend they live in the hood. They actually want to make the place appear more ghetto. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Someone keeps adding Douglas High School back into this article. As the school is in Parkland, not Coral Springs, it should not be listed in this entry. I have deleted it again. Horologium 05:33, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

We went through a similar situation on the Fort Lauderdale page, where it was agreed that schools that are not within the city limits are not listed. I think we should stick to the same here, although let's see if we can get something resembling consensus first. This page doesn't get edited all that often, and I don't know how many people (if any) have it on their watch lists. BTW, it might be a good idea to change the notation for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High to "out of city limits" rather than "off-limits", because the latter makes it sound like it is something that is banned... -Horologium t-c 14:14, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

(outdent) I just did a little digging through the school maps for Broward County Schools, and I discovered that Westglades Middle School and Park Trails Elementary School, both in Parkland, have the Heron Bay nieghborhood in their attendance areas. Do you know if the school data includes Coral Springs students attending those two schools as well? We might want to create a list page (perhaps List of Schools in Coral Springs, Florida), and include all of the public and private schools in the city, then have a section at the end of the list noting the three Parkland schools that cover a portion of the city. It appears that only the high school has boundaries south of the Sawgrass Expressway (in fact, it has a finger running through the center of the city all the way down to Royal Palm Boulevard, between University Drive and Coral Springs Drive), but Heron Bay is a part of Coral Springs. I don't think those cities are included, per this. They may even have some people attending Magnets, etc, but the numbers are not significant. MDouglas has 3,044 people, though.Legionarius 16:37, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Trivia

I tagged the trivia section; some of the cites are pretty weak, and some of them belong elsewhere in the article. A new section entitled "Famous residents" could cover the members of New Found Glory, and the signage issue for the original McDonald's at Sample and Woodside could be moved to the introductory paragraph, or a new section discussing the city's history. The strict laws regarding neighborhood appearance, such as the bans on boats and clotheslines, and the exterior paint approval requirements, could easily be developed into a section that would be appropriate for the "Golden Arches" ban. The rest could be quietly deleted and few would notice their absence.

Economy

The Standards & Poors report on the city's bond rating (AAA) is on the city website, here. It's the best of the three bond reports on the site, as it is the most recent. The Moody's report is from 1999, and the Fitch report is from 2003. the S&P is from 2004, and it is well-written and informative. If you need to reference the other two reports, they are here(Moody's, PDF) and here (Fitch, PDF). There is also an external audit of the city's finances from KMPG, available here (PDF; note that the second and third pages of the report are improperly sequenced, they need to be reversed). Coral Springs Medical Center

I removed the statement about Coral Springs Medical Center being in the top 20% of hospitals nationwide because it was incorrect. It is in the 20th percentile, which means it is in the bottom 20 percent. However, I question the methodology used by the cited report, and note that the hospital focuses on obstetrics and neonatal care, which were not the focus of the report. I've reassessed this article at 'B' class; it's clearly well beyond 'stub' class right now. Getting close to GA class, but probably needs a good copyedit first. For the culture section, we could add the Coral Springs History Museum, which is the oldest structure in the city, add a little more information about the covered bridge (the only one on a public road in Florida), and the artwork cited by Legionarius. We don't have to mention the names of the artists, only note that a variety of public and private groups have created art displays around the city. I left the two theaters in for now, but they might be candidates for removal; they're non-notable, and they're not even the oldest theaters in the city. Movie Center III in Royal University Plaza was the first, but it closed in the mid-1980's. There was also a theater in the Charter School when it was still a mall.
