Knighthood[edit]

We have him in the category Recipients of Honorary British Knighthoods, yet we call him "Sir Constantijn". These don't go together. Honorary knights may use whatever postnominal letters might be appropriate, but do not get the style "Sir". We need to find out the exact status of his honour. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 01:56, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sir, British knighthoods granted to foreigners in earlier centuries were not honorary; that is to say, the title "Sir" was indeed awarded to foreigners. In addition to Huygens being granted a knighthood by the British Crown, there were also the foreigners Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Sir Anthony van Dyck, and Sir Peter Lely. I do not know exactly when non-British subjects who were awarded British knighthoods were no longer allowed to be called "Sir" -- perhaps around 1700. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.51.146.251 (talk) 23:45, 3 September 2013 (UTC) Huygens is indeed given the title "Sir" in the esteemed second edition of The Oxford Dictionary of Music (revised edition), by Michael Kennedy, C.B.E. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.51.146.251 (talk) 23:53, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
