Wreck of the Mary Deare[edit]

The book and subsequent film Wreck of the Mary Deare are fictional adaptations of the "coffin ship" theme. The owners and the captain conspire to sink the ship in deep water and collect insurance on an expensive cargo which had actually been taken off previously and sold elsewhere. It may be a matter of opinion as to whether The Perfect Storm falls into this category or not.

Two types of Coffin Ship?[edit]

Coffin Ship (insurance) and Coffin Ship relate to the same poor standard vessels I think they should be merged. The Irish emigrant experience of these vessels is historically important but Coffin Ships should not be treated as unique to the Irish or any other specific emigrant group.C3MC2 (talk) 23:59, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why did insurers insure coffin ships?[edit]
