Is obesity a condition or a disease?[edit]

Body Volume Index[edit]

The article mentions the existence of a Body Volume Index but there are no further details. Unfortunately that topic is redirected back to this article. 79.79.248.65 (talk) 10:54, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

An article for the Body volume index was created on 4 October 2007‎ and underwent many years of editing.
On 13 July 2017‎ an editor created the Body Volume Indicator article. It was a word-for-word copy of this version of the Body volume index article. This copy seems to be WP:AGF work by someone who was not familiar with wikitext, wiki-editing, renaming articles, redirects, and Wikipedia policies. Another editor cleaned up the wikitext and apparently did not spot that the new article was a copy of an existing article. That editor's edits resulted in this version on 13 July 2017.
On 18 July 2017‎ Wikipedia editor Doc James reviewed the "new" article and decided to redirect both it and the Body volume index articles to Classification of obesity. After looking at the BVI articles, I agree with that redirect as the articles made several key claims that were not supported by citations. The topic of BVI appears to be notable but needs to be thoroughly sourced.

A Google Scholar search for "Body Volume Index" returns about 147 results but many of them are about marine mammals and other animals from turkeys to cows. While there are articles suggesting that a Body Volume Index for humans could produce better diagnostics than the existing Body Mass Index for some people it appears it's more of a research interest topic though at least one company is selling a commercial BVI tool.
A Google Scholar search for "Body Volume Indicator" returns zero results. It gets 11 results on Google Books but none of the results appeared to be reliable sources or useful.

There's at least one company selling a Body Volume Indicator (BVI) measurement and calculator tool. That company is using a smartphone's camera to take front and side profile photos of a person.^[1] A smartphone app then analyses the photos plus the entered height, weight, age, gender, plus level of fitness and generates a BVI number.^[2] While there's a patent^[3], the calculations/methods used to calculate the BVI are not disclosed. That company has also trademarked the phrase "BVI".^[4] That is going to complicate resurrecting an article about BVI as while the academic research topic seems notable the commercial product is not.

An employee of a company selling a BVI measurement and calculator tool apparently is the person who created the Body Volume Indicator article by copying the existing Body volume index article. That person, or a co-worker then complained about the redirects.
