Northcote Library Apology Committee[edit]

The text suggests that this organisation was formed by non-Anglo ethnic group members who were affected by the library age restriction policy, and in particular the decision of the City Librarian, the late Myrtle Fletcher, with the support of certain Northcote Councillors, to deny access to the Council library by persons under the age of fourteen. This is doubtful. The organisation was founded by an Italian, but this does not mean immigrants were affected by this policy in great numbers. It was young Anglo residents who were most discriminated against by this policy, and it was Anglo councillors who supported this policy. A local Anglo resident campaigned against Miss Fletcher and certain councillors well before Ms D'Amico organised the Apology Committee.
