Images[edit]

There are lots of nice images in this article; however the layout might be helped by using template:multiple image to aid the layout rather than using "gallery". Examples can be seen on Wells Cathedral. I am also not used to seeing mulitple links to categories on commons in different sections. These normally come in external links at the end of the document. I started removing these but then realised that they may go to different sub cats on commons eg graveyard etc.— Rod talk 18:52, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the image links that you removed did go to sub-categories - although the images of the exterior had not yet been subcategorised - perhaps I should do that. I have recently begun to put such subcategories within the text because for some reason visitors to WP can never find that commonscat box, however carefully I explain to them that they just have to scroll down and look at the bottom right hand corner of the article. There are now quite a few institutions taking an interest in my articles, such as departments of English Heritage, the Church of England, local historians etc., and they all want to see more pictures than I can put in the article. --Storye book (talk) 07:45, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's great that you have loads of useful pictures which help to illustrate the article (and that others are interested) but Wikipedia:Wikimedia sister projects and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Links to sister projects suggest these should be at the end and should only have one link (to the top level cat in this case).— Rod talk 08:35, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Arts and Crafts style[edit]

In the lead and infobox the building is described as being "built in Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts style" which struck me as strange (it looks gothic revival to me) and this is uncited and the arts and crafts style is not mentioned elsewhere in the article. In the exterior section it is described as "gothic revival", with a citation - so I would suggest removing the arts and crafts claim from the lead unless a citation can be found to support it.— Rod talk 18:56, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

William Swinden Barber was always consistently an Arts and Crafts architect (see his own article). In his case, to be an Arts and Crafts architect meant that he always designed and commissioned hand-made architectural features, decorations and furnishings by local artisans. One of the styles which Arts and Crafts artists used was the Gothic Revival style (see Arts and Crafts movement). Barber designed this particular building in partnership with James Mallinson, but since it was always Barber onsite supervising the building and Mallinson does not appear to have turned up there at all, (cited in article) Barber was clearly what is today termed the project architect - that is, it was he who personally drew up the plans and carried the project through. The Arts and Crafts philosophy was the very essence of his workmanship, and is evident across all his works. Before Barber's WP article was created, he had had no biography written or research done on him, but one of his churches (James the Less at New Mills in Derbyshire) is a good example - see descriptions of Arts and Crafts workmanship (though not termed as such) here and here. If the "arts and crafts claim" as you call it were dubious, then I should remove it - but the Arts and Crafts worksmanship comprises everything that Barber put onsite, and it could not be more obvious. --Storye book (talk) 08:13, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK I see your point and I think the revision of the lead helps, but it would still be useful to be able to provide a citation which supports the point.— Rod talk 08:38, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
