chiefs of allegiance[edit]

base[edit]

Is a base the equivalent of a chief except at the bottom? Is such a thing allowed in traditional heraldry?

Yes, in terms of its appearance, although they are not generally used as a mark for difference the way a chief is. There are many examples of the base in medieval rolls of arms from across Europe. --EncycloPetey (talk) 16:00, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

heap big chief[edit]

In some medieval and Renaissance drawings of coats of arms, the chief is drawn even deeper, so that it fills almost all the top half of the shield. In some cases, it is drawn so wide that it will look as though the shield is divided party per fess.

This is rather common in Italy; at least, I've seen a lot of Italian coats with oversized Ghibelline chiefs. Dunno if this is worth mentioning. —Tamfang (talk) 07:10, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
