Guessing[edit]

  • The date on which the lighthouse was moved is variously reported as 1917, 1918 or 1919 by the sources.
  • I do not know if the height figure is for the light source, or of the top of the tower.
  • I got the height above sea level by adding 82 ft to 579 ft, a commonly given level of Lake Michican above sea level, so this figure could well be off a few feet.
  • I derived the coordinates from google and yahoo maps, and I could be off by as much as an arc-second--my figure should not be used for navigation. Speciate 21:41, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the height of the tower based upon the majority of the sources. I note that Terry Pepper's databases are in conflict with some of the sources (including his own article on Grosse Point Light), and I've written to him about this. There is one measurement for tower height, which goes from the base of the tower to the tip of the lantern vent. In any event, "height" in the infobox refers to the focal plane height relative to mean water level, not to distance above sea level. This is because in an era before GPS the height of the focal plane above the water level was a way to triangulate your distance from the light. A full discussion of this is at the Databases in Terry Pepper Seeing the Light. I would note that Terry Pepper's databases on tower height and focal plane do have references to specific iterations of the Coast Guard lightlists, but he has written to me that those sources are in conflict. I also put in a bunch of links that might provide sources on the date of the move. I would say that as a general rule, Terry Pepper is very thorough in his documentation and research, and is (IMHO) generally more reliable than even the Coast Guard website and the National Park Service Inventory of Historic Lights. Disposition of the original Third Order Fresnel lens[edit]

I note that Terry Pepper, Seeing the Light, writes that the original lens is still in place. However, I went with the information in the National Park Service, Maritime Heritage Program, Inventory of Historic Lights which says it was moved to Cabrillo National Monument. While I have no idea which is true, Pepper says he's never personally visited this light, and the National Park Service would seem to be in the best position to know about a move of the lens, I think. The Coast Guard site lacks any specifics on this lens. I would add that the National Parks Inventory also says in the Grosse Point Light article that only three original Fresnel lenses remain in place on the Great Lakes. http://www.nps.gov/history/maritime/nhl/grossept.htm I would add that this statement is wrong, as I personally have seen and know that the 3.5 order Fresnel lens is still in place at Sturgeon Point Light, and that isn't cited in their article. So one must also 'take with a grain of salt' the representations made in the National Park Service inventory. However, if the article intends to limit consideration to only lenses that have been in place since day one at a particular light, then it would be correct, as Sturgeon Point's lens was replaced in the 1880s, and a larger lens put in.7&6=thirteen (talk) 12:04, 16 May 2008 (UTC) Stan[reply]

Rowlett, Russ Lighthouse Directory link[edit]

Rowlett, Russ, Indiana Lighthouses University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill doesn't work. But if you go to the list of lights at Rowlett, he has the page for the Indiana lights. It's a mystery to me. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 12:03, 25 September 2009 (UTC) Stan[reply]

Current lens[edit]

While I would guess that the current lens (if I am correct as to my guess) would go in the lighthouse infobox as 

| currentlens = 300 mm Tidelands Signal acrylic.

Removed the statement about Rawley Point[edit]

I've removed the statement about the disposition of the skeletal tower from the exhibition. It isn't relevant to the discussion of this light, and secondary sources disagree on where it went. See under Talk:Rawley Point Light for more discussion; note that primary sources of the time state that it was destined for the Waackaack Rear Range Light, as do some of our secondary sources.
