Lower and upper church[edit]

No attention was given to the fact that there are two churches there. No caption mentions in which of the 2 the picture was taken.

The file with the original plans has the two as the "lower (winter) and upper (summer) church". Is that still the case, or did this reflect a 19th-century situation, where heating was a major problem? Has the recent reconstruction even reproduced this 2-levels layout? What saints or holy principles are the respective churches and altars dedicated to, as it's not common to have both with the same dedication? Is the lower church fully underground? What happened to the medieval remains?[edit]

Given the centrality of Vladimir in Rus' history, the finds seem of major importance; the 19th-century academicist cathedral, fully rebuilt in the late 1990s, far less so.

Have they been preserved - in the 19th century, during the WWII destruction, during the 1990s rebuilding process?

Are they documented? Still visible somewhere? Preserved under the modern church, but fully covered by it?

The 1927 "excavations" took place at a time when archaeology as a modern science didn't really exist yet. What is the value of Kruse's work? Has any newer work been done, maybe after the WWII destruction?

"As a result, the remains of the ancient Christian churches, including a cruciform basilica, were found at the centre of the market square."

How many? Were they grouped into one single complex (the way it's formulated, it sounds as if they were), and does the cathedral cover them all? Or is it standing above the cruciform church?

Where does the 1850 monastery stand in relation to the ancient churches and the modern one? Or has it moved elsewhere, because there's no more mention of it and the cathedral doesn't seem to be surrounded by any monastic buildings. Did the Bolsheviks do away with it? The war?

Any details available about the ancient churches?

Too much text & disparate, non-essential details and too little systematic, thorough presentation of the site and even of the modern building to my taste. Arminden (talk) 13:42, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
