Bussing[edit]

Somebody should write about it. Somebody, ideally, who knows more about it than I do. Stilgar135 23:52, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion[edit]

What is the history surrounding the separation of Somerville? -- Beland 23:33, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See "Beyond the Neck" by the Somerville Historical Commission for the details of Somerville's founding. Essentially, Somerville is a composite of land deeded or exchanged by Cambridge, Charlestown and Medford. The part Charlestown contributed was an isolated area "beyond the Neck" (where Sullivan Station is now was a narrow isthmus at one time).
Also, the "colonial, red brick, bow-faced houses" (loose quote) section needs fixing. If I'm not mistaken, those are probably Victorian NEO-colonials, not 17th-18th century structures. (Can't believe everything those real estate agents say...!) The Warren Tavern includes early structural material, but so much else was destroyed by various fires that less original colonial fabric is there than might be wished. Neighborhood changed because of colonial architecture?[edit]

"While it has had a substantial Irish American population since the migration of Irish during the Irish famine of the 1840s, since the late 1980s the neighborhood has changed dramatically because of its close proximity to downtown, and its colonial architecture."

Pretty weird. How has the neighborhood changed dramatically because of colonial architecture? Without some explanation, I plan to deleted the last phrase in the sentence (last four words). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.68.134.1 (talk) 15:24, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Postcards[edit]

This http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/users/rauch/charlestown/postcards/postcards_19th_century.html lists some PD (because of age) postcards of Charlestown. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:50, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is Charlestown's county?[edit]

We are told that the Boston area takes in six counties. Please include the county to which Charlestown belongs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.185.161.127 (talk) 02:48, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Location of the Battle Of Bunker Hill[edit]

It's a widespread meme that "the Battle of Bunker Hill was not fought on Bunker Hill, but rather on Breed's Hill." It's common for the meme to be stated whenever the Battle of Bunker Hill is mentioned, but it is without foundation. Yes, much of the battle was fought on Breed's Hill; the American forces had built a fortification on Breed's Hill and the British forces stormed that fort, and Breed's Hill is the location of the Bunker Hill Monument, but the battle was actually fought all over the Charlestown peninsula: on Breed's Hill, on Bunker Hill, between the hills, in the built-up part of the town on the Charles River, on the beach along the shore of the Mystic River, along a rail fence at the foot of Bunker Hill, and on Charlestown Neck. Although it is true to say that the Bunker Hill Monument is located on Breed's Hill, the simplistic notion that the battle was fought not on Bunker Hill but rather on Breed's Hill is nonsense. Read "The Siege Of Boston" by Allen French, or even the battle's Wikipedia entry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.154.253.129 (talk) 03:54, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Education[edit]

I rearranged this section by just formatting the list into bullets. And also included a type of early childhood education school in Charlestown along with a few more college institutions.(LarissaIngala (talk) 13:57, 8 April 2016 (UTC))[reply]

Wikipedia course edits[edit]

This is being done for coursework in the Wikipedia Edu Program so we would appreciate edit suggestions made to me rather than just changed. thank you. (Kpixley23 (talk) 15:25, 27 April 2016 (UTC))[reply]

For starters,
  1. Remove the duplicated paragraph in the lead section. done
  2. Carefully proofread everything added or changed, and tidy it up.
  3. Watch punctuation. There should be a space typed after every period and comma.
  4. Use a spellchecker.
  5. To avoid possible copyright violations, remove or paraphrase anything copied or pasted from outside sources.
  6. Remove all expressions of personal opinion (unsourced commentary).
  7. Remove or provide sourcing for any controversial statements.
  8. See Help:Editing for other suggestions & guidance. Hertz1888 (talk) 16:04, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kpixley23: Please attend to the forementioned cleanup tasks quickly. Currently, many portions of the new text are faulty to the point of being unreadable. Hertz1888 (talk) 04:49, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

First item done. Attention needed to the rest! Hertz1888 (talk) 15:11, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for future article expansion[edit]

Further reading sections are generally a bad idea on Wikipedia since no one curates them and no one usually glosses them to give curious readers an idea of what the importance, bias, focus, &c. of the work is. Kindly restore this source

Not my area of expertise[edit]

This is Wikipedia. Standards for fact presentation are non-existent. Ergo, in the mere 20 years this article has been online, be sure not to state, in the legend at top right or elsewhere, Charlestown's land area, like every other encyclo- (even Wiki-) pedia article about a locality with a defined boundary has done since humans first walked erect.
