This page contains a major error when it states that Uri Carruth questioned "the sanity of Landis's wife." It was Landis himself who was suffering from mental illness (difficult to diagnose retroactively, but possibly bipolar disorder) and it was the airing of this dirty secret in an extremely graphic way that caused him to snap and shoot Carruth. It is clear from Landis's diary and newspaper accounts that Landis projected his own insanity onto his wife. Carruth was the voice of a group of settlers who felt that Landis was a cheat and a fraud. Landis was supported by a group of leading citizens who covered up his condition and tried to get him such medical help as was possible, which meant mostly sedating him with opiates and sending him to the Alps for a rest cure that didn't work. They closed ranks to protect his reputation at the time of the trial. The entire episode is summarized in my book, "The Trail of the Blue Comet" (West Jersey Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, 1993), although I left out many of the more lurid and indelicate details. I used Landis's published diaries (which when read closely leave no doubt as to his mental instability), and the "Vineland Independent" and other newspapers, which left enough clues in the trial coverage, and the R.G. Dun credit report that revealed his situation and the fact that he had an unmarried sister who took care of his affairs and protected him from the world. What is interesting about Landis's life is not the benign "founding father" image that was created for him, but the fact that a flawed person in his "manic" phase could actually accomplish some solid achievements.
