Taxonomy: For all marine species, Project Gastropods uses the taxonomy in the online database WoRMS. When starting a new article, do not use sources of taxonomic information that predate the 2017 revision for all gastropod groups ("Revised Classification, Nomenclator and Typification of Gastropod and Monoplacophoran Families" by Philippe Bouchet & Jean-Pierre Rocroi, Bernhard Hausdorf, Andrzej Kaim, Yasunori Kano, Alexander Nützel, Pavel Parkhaev, Michael Schrödl and Ellen E. Strong in Malacologia, 2017, 61(1–2): 1–526.) (can be dowloaded at Researchgate.net), substituting the previous classification of 2005 Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Valid species?[edit]

Following the link to the first citation, it reads:

Many researchers have conjectured that perhaps only 10-20% of the species named within Cerionidae will eventually be found to represent valid species, the rest may be subspecies, demes or merely distinctive combinations of alleles. Although Gould and Paull (1978) reduced the 11 described species from Hispanola to the Virgin Island to a single species using multivariate analyses of shell characters, they reported that 95% of the specimens could be sorted to their source populations using this data.

Has this conjecture been borne out by more recent genetic studies? Either way, the article ought to say something about it, given how many species are listed here. 121a0012 (talk) 03:41, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
