A note on the naming of this article

A Google search shows that Norwalk, Ohio also has a section called "Midtown", therefore "Connecticut" is part of the name of this section. Noroton 20:42, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

The sign at the traffic island at the intersection of West Ave, Mott Ave, Belden Ave, and Wall Street reads: "Welcome to Norwalk Center" which would imply a name like "Central Norwalk" would be helpful for this article. I suspect the term "Downtown Norwalk" might be too readily confused with the area of Washington Street in SoNo. There appears to be no mention of the Norwalk Green in this article though I think it and the areas explicitly discussed in this article all fall within the "1st taxing district" (which does not appear to be mentioned in the article either). Another term I've seen used is "the Wall Street area" (which is a phrase commonly used to designate lower Manhattan). I suspect this Wikipedia article is one of the few (perhaps the only) that designates the area of discussion as "Midtown Norwalk". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.86.73.252 (talk) 02:13, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Google gives this result for "Midtown Norwalk" and this result with many more items for "Downtown Norwalk" + Connecticut. I know The Advocate newspaper calls the area "Downtown", but I recall The Hour calling it Midtown some years ago. When I named the article I worried about this area being confused with South Norwalk. This page of Common Council minutes seems to indicate "downtown Norwalk" refers to South Norwalk. I see other websites, including POKO Partners, which is redeveloping part of the Wall Street area, calling that section "downtown Norwalk". I think it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. Those are interesting search results. I was previously unaware of just how many copies/ripoffs/mirrors of wikipedia are out on the web, but the search for "Midtown Norwalk" can certainly uncover a large number of them. Wow, that gets 20K Google hits ("Central Norwalk" + Connecticut). I have to say I'm unsure. I only want to have an article name that is the easiest to use with the least confusion and that is the most "intuitive" (in other words, it would be the best guess of someone trying to remember the article name who was using the search box at the left side of the page). I'd feel a lot more comfortable if someone else with some familiarity with Norwalk endorsed a name change, but if you feel strongly about it, go ahead. We can still have redirects for other names. I would object to changing the name without changing all the links that show up when you click on "What links here" in the toolbox on the left side of the Wikipedia screen. Many of those links are from infoboxes like the one for Fairfield County, but they should be changed. If you do that, I'll have no objections, but I still hope we could have more input. I am willing to help modify the articles that currently link to "Midtown Norwalk". According to Help:Merging and moving pages a user must be logged into an account that is at least 4 days old in order to move a page to a new name. I am unregistered and will not be able to do that. The only remaining questions I have are: Do we need any more formal discussion or voting process to proceed with the article rename now? By the way I've found that "Down Town District" was the name used to refer to East Norwalk during the 19th century (and before). The schoolhouse at Mill Hill was the "Down Town District" school. There was also an "Up Town District" school that was used as a Town Hall meeting house in the 18th century that was North of the Green (next to St. Paul's Church). Yes, I'd be happy to move it. No, we don't need any further approval from anyone, but anybody can object later (and probably nobody will). Please just confirm for me that "Central Norwalk" is the name you want to move it to. Interesting information. If you can cite sources, that would all be good in the East Norwalk article.

Thank you. I suspect we only have a choice between a rename to "Center Norwalk" and "Central Norwalk". Between those two choices I do prefer "Central Norwalk" (it should be possible to redirect "Center Norwalk" to "Central Norwalk". I presume redirection occurs for an article rename operation). Thank you for completing the rename. I think I have modified all of the "What links here" pages. For example instead of this is in the Midtown section of... they now read this is in the Central section of....
