Ohio State Federation of Colored Women[edit]

Sources agree that Clifford was involved in the founding of the Ohio State Federation of Colored Women, but they disagree about her role. Mary-Elizabeth Murphy writes that Clifford was the recording secretary,^[1] but Danita Harris writes that she was the organization's president.^[2]

Are there any primary-source documents available today that could clarify which writer is correct, or if Clifford held both roles at different points in time? Samantha Gould (talk) 03:19, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On further review, I found that Mary Elizabeth Murphy was referring to a different branch of the NACW, and that all sources are agreed that Clifford was the President of the Ohio State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs. Samantha Gould (talk) 18:57, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Additions[edit]

I just updated this page, and wanted to highlight some areas for future additions as more sources become available. Contemporary newspapers available in archives (Chronicling America and Archive.org for free, Newspapers.com is behind a paywall) frequently mention Clifford, for her work as a clubwoman, political activist, and writer. She also appears as the host and guest of dinner parties and other social functions. Notably, these newspapers frequently mention Clifford as a temperance activist and lecturer, which the secondary sources I was able to find only mention very briefly. As more secondary sources become available, I hope future editors will be able to expand here on her temperance and lecturing work.

Other photographs and drawings of Clifford also exist, both in newspaper archives (here and here, especially) and elsewhere. I hope future editors will be able to add these to the page. Samantha Gould (talk) 21:50, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
