Etymology[edit]

"The historical etymology of Carrickstone's name is uncertain although it is now undoubtedly tied to the Roman altar"

Carrick is a common anglication of a Celtic word for stone, Carraig, not to be confused with the related term "craig". It is thus a tautology.
