Not a lot of history other than from The National Research Center but it is an old Basque Spanish last name. Original name was Garat De Axea according to The Historical Research Center[reply]

The Spanish Surname Caratachea is a variant of the surname Garat, from the place of Garat De Axea which was the Pyrenees in the kingdom of Navarre Garataxea

Ok, I have some research information and will update it tomorrow. This is factual with information about the name and the Basque culture and Origin along with the Basque Culture Center and Museum here in Boise Idaho.
