Beer Festival?[edit]

This festival is definitely not a real "beer festival", the whole festival is in fact an agricultural fair where you can also buy animals (horses, cows, pigs, ...). The Oktoberfest in Munich focuses on beer, while the "Wasen" in Canstatt focuses on attractions, there are 6 tents where you can buy beer and two tents where you can drink wine - quite atypical of a "beer festival" - isn't it? You're dead right. This is why in the article - SECOND sentence - it says "It is sometimes also referred to by foreign visitors as the Stuttgart Beer Festival although it is actually more of a fair." The problem is, people (by which I mean non-Stuttgarters) often hear about it first in the context of the beer tents. It's not made any easier by the official Stuttgart Marketing website referring to it as the beer festival - see [1]. I think it's a deliberate ploy of theirs to position Stuttgart as the next best alternative to the Munich beer festival. Judging by the people who came over from the UK last time round it seems to be working, fuelled by cheap airlines promoting Stuttgart as a must-puke destination. Though a lot of them never got in, they didn't realise the queues are so long. Anyway, are you trying to suggest something on this page needs editing? I think it does state quite clearly that it's not a beer festival in the classic sense. BuzzWoof (talk) 19:42, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't realize the second sentence, all I realized was that this festival is listed in the category "beer festivals" - of course it's not necessary to create a new category for only one festival - And I don't think that the article needs editing - it's ok the way it is. Merger proposal[edit]

I'm reopening the debate. There are two pages on Wikipedia with near-identical content, this page and Stuttgart Beer Festival. As the fest is not just a beer festival (pointed out in both articles), and Cannstatter Wasen is the actual name of the festival, I vote this page stays and the other article redirects here. I'd suggest merging the articles too. THe only problem would be under what name. Since entering the debate last time I've completely overhauled the article for Stuttgart so clearing this up should be child's play, if other editors allow us some leeway. My personal suggestion, having lived here for 12 years, would be to call it Cannstatter Wasen and have redirects on all the other names it's given! Having just been to the Cannstatter Volksfest I'm also in favour if it being called this, and not the Stuttgart Beer festival. It is in Bad Cannstatt after all (technicaly not Stuttgart) and has been pointed out it's not a beer festival. Everyone knows the one in Munich is called the Oktoberfest, so people neeed to learn the correct name for this festival too. Have a link here from the page called Stuttgart Beer Festival, so that searches still work well. Adrian (non-member)

Perhaps that's the most valid point. The Oktoberfest is a type of beer festival, but when push comes to shove it's called the Oktoberfest. Despite Stuttgart Marketing's attempts to rebrand the event, it's the Canbstatter Wasen. BuzzWoof (talk) 13:02, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have lived in Stuttgart for six years and this Wikipedia entry is the first I've ever seen that says the wasen is the fest. In my experience, the festival is *not* called the Canstatter Wasen. The Canstatter Wasen is a piece of ground -- a fairground, if you will -- on which the fest is held. The fest itself is called the Canstatter Volksfest, which means the People's Fest. I believe *this* is what it should be listed under.

The fest in the Spring is called the Fruehlingsfest, which means Spring Fest. It, too, is held on the Canstatter Wasen. Throughout the year the Canstatter Wasen is host to concerts, circuses, and other types of entertainment, as most fairgrounds are. According to the German Wikipedia entry for Canstatter Wasen (shown below) The Canstatter Wasen is a 35-hectare large fest area that sits along the Neckar in the part of Stuttgart known as Bad Canstatt. The Canstatter Wasen is a piece of the Neckar Park Fairground.

Der Cannstatter Wasen ist ein 35 Hektar großes Festgelände am Ufer des Neckars im Stuttgarter Stadtbezirk Bad Cannstatt... Der Cannstatter Wasen ist Teil des Veranstaltungsgeländes Neckarpark.
