Article thrown in

The following article seems to have been thrown into the opening section of the Diaz article by User:62.254.64.14 (Contribs). Maybe it can be incorporated, but not in that form.

A girl with a rough-and-tumble tomboy upbringing is signed up by a model agency after being spotted at a party aged 16.

She travels the world for five years, appearing in ads for Calvin Klein, Levi's and Coca-Cola, before a chance offer to audition for a movie.

She tries out for a minor role but, despite no acting experience, the director demands that she plays the lead female part.

The film is a global hit and the girl becomes one of the world's highest-paid actresses, enjoying fame and fortune beyond her wildest dreams.

It sounds like a far-fetched plot, but the Cameron Diaz tale is a real-life Hollywood success story.

Her first film was 1994's The Mask, opposite Jim Carrey, and she has gone on to appear in hits such as There's Something About Mary, Charlie's Angels and Shrek.

The daughter of a Cuban-American oil company foreman and an Anglo-German-Native American import broker, Diaz has said her childhood in Long Beach, California, was "very normal".

As a model, she had a string of exotic assignments but got fed up with her main work for clothing catalogues.

At 19, she agreed to model for Rutter, wearing fishnet stockings in a disused warehouse, because she wanted to present "images that are great images - rather than just a model who sells clothes".

She said she was "not ashamed" of the resulting shots. "I didn't think of them as pornographic. I didn't think of them as perverted," she told the court.

"My boobs looked good," she said. "At least I had that going for me."

Her model agency was in the same building as The Mask's casting director, who was looking for an unknown actress to play a nightclub singer in the zany comedy.

Initially reluctant, she auditioned to play a reporter but was called back a dozen times and grabbed her chance when offered the lead.

The film made more than $320m (£185m) worldwide and Diaz's performance marked her out as a hot new talent.

A wrist injury forced her to pull out of her next role, in the film version of computer game Mortal Kombat, and she opted for lower-profile movies including The Last Supper, Feeling Minnesota and She's the One.

She wanted "to get different scripts than the itsy bimbo parts I was being sent", she said.

Her reputation grew further alongside Julia Roberts in 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding before There's Something About Mary cemented her star status the following year.

Not only has she continued to shun "itsy bimbo parts", but she has also avoided being the only big name in blockbuster star vehicles - lessening the risk and pressure.

In Being John Malkovich, she played a frumpy pet shop worker and was the hard-nosed football team owner opposite Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday.

She capitalised on her glamorous appearance for Charlie's Angels - as a high-kicking secret agent rather than vacant blonde - sharing top billing with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu.

She lent her voice to Princess Fiona in animated smash Shrek, played Tom Cruise's ex-girlfriend in Vanilla Sky and was seen scrapping with Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York.

Hollywood heavyweight Harvey Weinstein campaigned for her to get an Oscar nomination for Gangs of New York, but that honour has so far eluded her.

She has, though, been nominated for four Golden Globes and won critics' prizes.

She also regularly appears in more light-hearted polls - ranging from sexiest women in the world in men's magazines to best dance sequence at the MTV Movie Awards.

Keen not to lose sight of the down-to-earth tomboy, she beat 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys in a Celebrity Burp-Off at the 2001 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and proudly professes to have broken her nose four times.

But despite her childhood scrapes, she has struggled with the downsides of Hollywood fame.

She said she "felt violated" when Rutter tried to extort money from her for the topless photos and complained she has been "terrorised" by paparazzi.

Media interest has been heightened by relationships with fellow film stars Matt Dillon and Jared Leto and current partner, singer Justin Timberlake.

Eleven years after her screen debut, Diaz now sits alongside Julia Roberts atop the list of Hollywood's highest-paid female stars, commanding $20m (£11.5m) per film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

She puts much of her success down to luck and fun, but hard work and savvy decisions have gone a long way to securing her status as both a serious actress and pin-up idol.

There is so much missing from this article I don't really know where to begin. I've never added anything to an actual article otherwise I would handle these suggestions my self. This needs at least a listing of all movies that she has been in. Missjessica254 19:23, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Selected filmography

As per Wikipedia is not a collection of lists, I have reduced the "Filmography" section to just the films that have Wiki articles, and renamed it to "Selected filmography" ... people can click the IMDb External link at the end of the article to see the subject's full filmography with links to information about each of their films.

I have also used [[19xx in film|19xx]] tags for the years of the films, something that Some Other Editors do not appear to understand, since they seem to think that just linking [[19xx]] somehow has encyclopedic value.

Anonymous edits without comments may be reverted by anyone.

I am placing this boilerplate message on this Discussion page before I actually make the changes, so that I can just put "see Discussion page" in the edit summary, and hopefully not have my edit summarily reverted as vandalism by Some Other Editor.

non-NPOV dispute

The layout of her notable quotes is a little over-dramatic (quotes all alone surrounded by a lot of space). Imbedding these quotes in their referring paragraphs would be a little less over-stated. Over-dramatising what people say is also a form of bias.

The George Bush statements seem unremarkable since Bush is widely unpopular right now and millions of people might be wearing such a T-shirt. But the Peru controversy (with her Maoist handbag) stands out as a more unique situation and is worthy of mention (even though it probably was an inadvertant gaffe on her part).

I think including her problems with OCD is fair since sharing celebrity problems can be inspirational or at least comforting to he general public (well this famous person has my problem too, and in the case of Diaz, look-- she got over it, so maybe there is hope for me). 71.208.221.64 16:14, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Mao slogan/Peru incident

We should all decide if the Mao Zedong Slogan/Peru Incident should be included in the article.

Here is one of the edits that was added then deleted (the Mao Slogan/Peru Incident appears to have been added and deleted in one form or another multiple times).

HELP: Could someone source the (Diaz) "was unaware that Peru was in bloody conflict" etc. I have found NOTHING where she says she was unaware, only that she apologized for the potential offence.

Furthermore, since she has long been a world traveler, and this is (apparently)not her first visit to Peru, I would be shocked if she did not know ANYTHING about the decade of terrorsim suffered here in Peru (though, perhaps did not know details). If no one can find evidence that she did not know about the conflict, that statement really should be modified.

Also, I have updated the "Peru Issue" to more accuratly reflect her visit (and the press coverage here), on which she was wildly well received by the people (including of the campsino class who suffered the worst under the Sendero Threat), as well as by the Peruvian media from all political stripes.

As of today, the issue had not even hit our media. I live in Peru, and for days we have seen countless stories and photos of here in an EXTREMELY positive light, and to pretend that the "bag thing" is how Peruvians will remember her visit here is so misleading it is actually in error.

Native American?

In this 1997 Sunday Mirror article ([1]), Diaz states that her mother's parents were Cherokee. But that may be an exaggeration. Maybe they both had Cherokee ancestry, mixed in with German-English. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 06:39, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Hispanic-American actress?

The opening paragraph underwent a slight change. Diaz, formerly an American actress, has now become a Hispanic-American actress. According to WP:MOSBIO, the opening paragraph should mention a person's nationality, not his ethnic background. WP:MOSBIO states: Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. It can be discussed whether Diaz' ethnicity may be relevant to her notability and therefore be mentioned. Anyway, WP:MOSBIO does not state that nationality should or could be replaced by ethnicity. Wasn't there some scandal involving some semi-nude dominatrix type pics that she posed for early in her career? The photographer who had the rights to them sold them after she bacame a big star. Indeed! The user that did the change (2.89.40.178) has done changes to about 50 other pages of actors/actresses; on a cursory look those changes are to put a different picture.

Fix a couple of grammar errors

This sentence about My Sister's Keeper: "In the drama, Diaz plays a former lawyer and mother of two, one of who is dying of leukemia."

Snoop Dogg

Does anybody think it would be appropriate to add that she went to the same high school as Snoop Dogg for the benefit of anyone who's interested? I even remember seeing something somewhere (always with references) that he would sell her weed, there. I personally think that it would add a personal touch. If anyone has any thoughts let me know either here or on my talk page (frankly, I'd be surprised if anyone has any thoughts about this). I might just be Be bold and do it myself eventually; but I just want to see if anyone has any objections before they wipe out my edit. As far as notable, it's notable in the most provincial sense I have to admit. To some extent, it's known locally where I'm living (I live in a suburb of Long Beach). I think that it could be added in the early life section so as not to give the appearance of triviality. As far as reliable sources, reliable sources can be pulled up, trust me. Let me find something while I'm writing. Let's see... Here's a short two in one: [2]. Here's a reference from a more notable magazine: [3]. Here's a global, more exacting, as far as source, reference. Somewhat lengthier reference: [4]. These are just rough google pull-ups. I don't know if this satisfies hard to please people. It seems to me that it is a biography, isn't it? Or is it just the history of the actress career? I'm glad to know that she went to a school. Did she go till the end or just went for some years? These celebrities, whether we want it or not, are role-models and their education is important is especially in a world where education became terrible. For me she looks pretty dumb. Early Life | background

Diaz is a Spanish surname, not accented on the i btw. Many Diaz emigrated to Cuba from Spain since the 16 century, some of the first Spanish settlers of this family name was Bernal Diaz del Castillo whom travelled to Cuba in the early 1500s. When asked if she can speak Spanish she answered: "I know what you're saying, I really do. I just cannot respond to you back in Spanish. I can barely speak English properly. I didn't grow up in a Cuban or Latin community. I grew up in Southern California on the beach, basically. And I'm third generation. Changing of the name of the article

Shouldn't this article be called "Cameron Díaz", not "Cameron Diaz"? Her last name is spelt as Díaz in the first line of the article, yet the article is named something different. I am of course referring to the accent on the 'i' in 'Díaz'. Any thoughts? I think it should be moved. Rusty8 (talk) 18:15, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Well "Diaz" is the angelicized form of "Díaz" and so one could see it that they are two different surnames just like the related "Dias" is another surname. By looking at other Wikipedia articles, "Díaz" tends to be spelt that way by people that where born/raised in South America/Spain etc. and "Diaz" is used for people of South American/Spanish decent which is the category which Cameron falls under as she is part Cuban. According to US Search birth records, they have Cameron's surname as "Diaz". But I think as Cameron's surname has mostly, if not always, been spelt "Diaz" in the media and so I think we should go with "Diaz" for all these reasons and fix the first line of the article to fix the inconsistancy. As noted by Petrovsky18, in a post above and AngelOfSadness here, with Rusty8's concurrence, her name should be spelled "Cameron Diaz." We can't spell it with an accent mark without a consensus of reliable sources doing so. Not one cited source here gives an accent mark. Cameron Diaz doesn't even spell it with an accent mark. FHM is a men's magazine ("For Him Magazine") originally British and recently ported to the US. Imagine highbrow GQ meets lowbrow Maxim. I believe it's a Dennis Publishing magazine, but don't quote me on that.  ;)

Funny you don't post up who Cameron is dating on this page but list who Stephanie McMahon is with. Hers should not list it like this page doesn't list it.

Okay, so here's the deal. I realize you guys don't want to print unsubstantiated gossip about her taking a break or ending acting or whatever, but we do not leave a three year gap unexplained.

Tag Complete rewrite added

Currently the article is hotchpotch of individual additions that makes the bio hard to read and lacking quality. Moreover the chronology of events is confusing. In its present state the article is unworthy regarding a public figure of this stature. You can find ways to improve the article here. Mill 1 (talk) 18:22, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

I am currently reworking this article into a biographical timeline integrating Diaz's life and career, as the personal life section is rather empty and pointless. Charlie's Angels uncredited cameo still

The '2014-present: Post-acting ventures' subsection under 'Career' states "In 2019, she reprised her role from the Charlie's Angels film series with an uncredited cameo still in Elizabeth Banks' rendition." Does this mean a photo of Diaz is included in the film? I wouldn't really call that a "cameo still". I also can't actually find a source for this - especially a RS. When I google it, all the sources I can find state cameos by Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore actually couldn't be agreed upon.
