Untitled[edit]

This article is a little all over the place, could use an expert to tidy it up. zafiroblue05 | Talk 02:13, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

contradiction[edit]

It seems to me from reading the Geniza article and this one, that these documents were not intended to be exhumed and studied, much less published. Is there an explanation of how this happened? ... aa:talk 02:15, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How what happened? How the genizah was found? Dfass 04:15, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not so much found, but opened, studied, published, etc. Do I misunderstand the purpose of the device? ... aa:talk 23:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A geniza is just a place (not a device) where old documents are stored, like a synagogue attic or a basement. (Jewish religious documents are not put out in the garbage; out of respect, they are stored and sometimes buried. So the geniza is just such a storage place.) A geniza is "discovered" or "found" when someone decides to look through it and see whether there's anything interesting in there. However, I agree that the article needs more about the history of this particular genizah. I will see if I can add something. Dfass 00:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

¶ The article says that Agnes Lewis brought the Geniza to Solomon Schecter's attention in 1896, but the photo caption says Schecter was studying Geniza documents in 1895. Sussmanbern (talk) 05:35, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The documents are not especially intended NOT to be studied or published. So when they attracted academic interest there was no reason to treat them differently from any other old archive. Of course now they are now much better cared for than when they were just piled up in a loft. Johnbod (talk) 13:12, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Accounting subsection[edit]

It feels very dubious to me that the single subsection under "Contents and Significance" is Accounting, specifically talking about Jewish bankers. Given the amount of religious text under here, this is both not enough information, and putting off kind of antisemetic vibes. The article could really use more sections there talking about, for instance, the various rabbinical texts that were apparently found but have not been expanded on — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timmie99 (talkcontribs) 14:16, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning up and expanding[edit]

Hello - I've just created an account after noticing an error in date range of at the beginning of this article (now fixed w/refs - see [my edit]). Other commenters have noted that the article is a little messy and some sections are underdeveloped or contradictory. 16 years ago someone suggested an expert do some tidying, and I happen to have a PhD related to this topic, so I intend to do a bit more work correcting/expanding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by McSmithertonson (talkcontribs) 14:09, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
