Needs updating with archaeological evidence[edit]

This article represents a very outdated view of the period, one which relies too heavily on textual sources and does not include any archaeological evidence, which paints a very different picture of the 7th-8th centuries than what is depicted here. The decline of cities, for instance, has largely been challenged by recent archaeological excavations.
