James Braid[edit]

I've just removed a claim that the Braid Hills were named after the golfer James Braid. Whilst he did have some involvement with the course, the Hermitage of Braid (and the Braid Burn) are way older than James Braid himself, and the name probably comes from the De Brad family who were associated with the area from the times of King David I (c.1080 - 1153). (Reference for this: the Gazeteer of Scotland.)

For further evidence, upon checking the James Braid (golfer) article, it is worth noting that it does not repeat this impossible claim, and a quick internet search reveals a Scotsman newspaper article which includes a reader specifically asking the question of whether the course or hills are named after him, and being told by another reader that no, James Braid is not the source of the name. (See this Google cache of the article.) – Kieran T (talk) 13:56, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The name probably come from "Braghaid", which is the Gaelic for a hill range also to be found in Breadalbane. Before anyone quibbles, there are other Gaelic names in the city.-86.178.167.254 (talk) 12:35, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
