Denise Myers[edit]

If anyone ever wants to create an article about Bradie's coach, here's a good start for sources: [1]. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:11, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the lead[edit]

"Tennell began skating when she was two years old, even though she learned to walk late and had to wear orthotics in her shoes to correct a pronation problem in her feet. Her first rink was in Crystal Lake, Illinois. She began working with coach Denise Myers when she was nine, up until August 2020. Tennell won her first competition at the age of 10 as a juvenile and rose up the ranks, becoming a senior-level skater in November 2016. She spent the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 seasons recovering from a back injury, but came back in 2017, winning the gold medal at the 2018 U.S. Nationals and competing at the 2018 Olympics."

This paragraph in the lead is repeated essentially word-for-word later in the article in the Personal life section. Per WP:MOSLEAD: "The lead should stand on its own as a concise overview of the article's topic. It should identify the topic, establish context, explain why the topic is notable, and summarize the most important points, including any prominent controversies."

None of this is relevant to why is she is notable, other than becoming an Olympian, which is already included in listing her 2018 team medal. If it is already stated in the article, near verbatim, I'm not sure why it is part of the lead section of the article.

Paging Figureskatingfan since you re-added it.

User:Sunnyou31, please read WP:MOSLEAD more closely. It also states: The lead serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important contents. It is not a news-style lead or "lede" paragraph. The content in a lead is supposed to be repetitive, since it's a summary of the rest of the article. The original version of the lead does that. It establishes context and notability by summarizing her life and explaining how and why she got into figure skating. It summarizes her career. I suppose that it should include her wins thus far this season. There are no controversies because she really hasn't had any. This article is a work in progress, since Tennell is still an active skater. I felt that it needed to be expanded and improved because non-fans will want to know about her, and as the policy about leads also states, leads are important because most people spend just a few minutes at a WP article. Did you also know that many articles about women or female topics tend to have short and incomplete leads? For all these reasons, the lead should retain its current content. Figureskatingfan I agree that it could be expanded; however, a summary is supposed to provide an overview, not copy + paste one section of the article into the lead ("greater detail is saved for the body of the article", WP:MOSLEAD). For example, the paragraph could be restructured to something along the lines of mentioning how she rose to prominence by making the Olympic team despite relatively unremarkable junior results and training with a coach with (I believe) no previous national team members. YMMV, thanks for responding at least. Sunnyou31 (talk) 20:35, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
