Sheriff Ian Parkinson[edit]

There is some to-and-fro editing of the mention of Ian Parkinson, the Sheriff of San Luis Obispo [1]. "One of his sons is Ian Parkinson, the Sheriff of San Luis Obispo who has been involved in controversial prison deaths."

  1. As it stands, the claim that the sheriff is Bradford's son is unsourced (it is not in the cited refs). Without a reliable source to the relationship there is no question that this material should not be in the article.
  2. Even if sourced and appropriate, this material definitely does not need to be the article twice. It is not about the article's subject and does warrant inclusion in the lead.
  3. So, assuming we can reliably source the relationship, the question is should we include this material at all? I don't think so. The son (or supposed son) is not individually notable.The son is the sheriff of a facility where an inmate died after prolonged restraint. The sheriff does not appear to have been personally involved in the event, and possibly did not even know of the events until after the fact. Despite the claim that there are controversial prison deaths there seems to be nothing controversial about the second reported death. An inmate had a heart attack, but said that his pain might have just been because his arm was asleep. It does not seem out of the ordinary to me that he was not sent to the hospital. It seems WP:UNDUE to add this material. This looks more like an attempt to smear the article's subject than anything else. Meters (talk) 23:47, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, I thought the discussion was on my IP page.
As it stands, there are many claims that people are related on Wikipedia that are not proved through cited references.
The son is the sheriff of San Luis Obispo, CA - not just a facility where an inmate died. It has been proven that he was aware that the inmate was restrained the way he was when he died. The first controversial death was in regard to an inmate that was in a restraint chair for over 40 hours and did not receive medical care during that time.

See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. You were edit warring to restore contentious material which included an unsourced claim. It does not matter if other articles also have unsourced material. If you wish to challenge any other unsourced information feel free to request a citation with {{cn}} or simply remove it as being unsourced. Any unsourced contentious information must be removed. until it can be sourced.
This is beside the point. I have no reason not to believe that Ian is Bradford's son, and I expect that it will be possible to reliably source that fact assuming iit is true. I simply raised that issue as another reason why you should not be restoring the original edit. The main point that needs to be discussed here by editors is whether the information should be included in this article at all. The sheriff is not individually notable, and his involvement in the case is not clear. Is it WP:DUE to mention this case in an article about the sheriff's uninvolved 83-year-old father? I think so. Please read WP:RS. Neither of those links say that Ian is Bradford's son. The sources say that they are related, without specifying how. It is WP:SYNTH or WP:OR to say that Ian is Bradford's son based on those sources. And even if Radaris did explicitly give the exact relationship, it is not a reliable source. As the website says "Radaris does not verify or evaluate each piece of data, and makes no warranties or guarantees about any of the information offered." Meters (talk) 20:22, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article also states that Bradford is the only son of Herbert Parkinson. Why did Aquafunk not remove that information? It is not cited anywhere. Ask for a citation, remove it, or source it yourself, as you please. And User:Aquafunk made no mention of the fact that the Ian's parentage claim was unsourced when he or she removed the material. I pointed that out as an additional reason. Meters (talk) 20:22, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just dropping by! Where exactly is the information found? You haven't linked it, which means other editors cannot refer to the source that you are stating is "found elsewhere". StaringAtTheStars (talk) 16:12, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be restoring these sources. Sources do not have to be online. Tag dead links with {{dl}} so the bot will look for an archived copy, and do not remove dead links that are already tagged, Meters (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
