Bourton House[edit]

The statement that Bourton House was built in 1845 is in error. The 1841 census shows my Great Grandfather John Kent living there with his family. It was probably acquired by his father (another John Kent) some time after 1775. It may have been built by him, or may have been an expansion of an older structure. The younger John Kent sold Bourton House to Tucker in 1845, and it was significantly expanded thereafter. This is the source of the error in the reference to Pevsner. The sale is recorded in the Manor Court rolls of Shrivenham. There is no doubt that these records refer to the structure itself and not the enclosure, as I have personal records of John Kent's children describing life in Bourton House prior to his removal to Aldbourne in 1845.
