The African history is an oral tradition in its majority, most of the written tradition were lost or hidden to prevent invaders from the north (Europeans or Arabs) to destroy them such as the manuscripts of TimbuktuBBC The lost libraries of Timbucktu. However there are records with the French archives and other that proves that Biton was proposed as a leader of the Bambara people. After having led the defense of Segou and its surrounding fending off the Maures from the north and the European Slave traders. Thus, the people of Segou suggested him, (Mammary Coulibaly great grandson of the less regarded Kaladian Coulibaly). It is a disgrace to associate him with slave trading given the fact that he came to power just for defending the Bambara from enslavement. I am his direct descendent and we have Griots telling the story of Biton who was a Muslim which most people seem to be missing, in opposition to his great grandfather who was not Muslim. Thank you for removing this mention of “Coulibaly’s new empire thrived on trade, particularly that of slaves captured in its many wars and resold to traders to the south and west; the demand for slaves then fueled the empire on to further wars.” Until you can verify the reliability of the data. Moreover it gives the impression that slave trading with Europeans took place under the Coulibaly’ watch when it is far from the truth, although I will concede that it was a “société féodale”society of class ruled by nobles who would have private servants (Slaves) and public for communal services. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.92.21.9 (talk) 21:09, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
