IMHO, Birmingham Steel is important because it was the classic example of why the U S steel industry was uncompetitive and thusly consolidated in the 1990's. It was a well run company but couldn't compete due to its scale, was bought out by Nucor, and Nucor has proven to be one of the leaders in the new age of steel.
