Wyman Quitting the Rolling Stones[edit]

Apparently Bill was a big fund of the early version of the Dungeons and Dragons game. Allegedly he used to play it with his roadies. Anyone confirm this?

Mikey

@Whotookthatguy If you think the "biography" section seems amateurly written, this may have to do with the fact that it was the beginning of the Bill Wyman section and that no source info was mentioned (Wikipedia has since then become much stricter in its policy). Nevertheless, the info in the section was mostly based on Wyman's autobiography "Stone Alone". Don't know anything about some gay club stuff. By the way, I'm not a native speaker English.

@ First user: Jagger said in an interview not long after Bill's departure that "it won't faze us too much, I think". Did he say it? Yes. Do I know in which particular interview? No. Maybe The Stones didn't replace Wyman, because they had reached a stage in which they didn't need another fixed band member but could do with temporarily hired "employees".

So, what was the reason for quitting the Stones in 1993? There is no reason given in the article, except for the fact he was not pleased with the songwritiing monopol of Jagger/Richards. Saemikneu (talk) 17:14, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Correction[edit]

Sorry, that should be "fan", not "fund"

Wyman's "odd" relationships, vs. Gary Glitter[edit]

Bill's son is/was his own father's father in law?! You could not make it up.

Anyway, if what is written here is true, and Bill actually ***ked a 13 year old girl at the grand young age of 47... in what way is he different from Gary Glitter, who is routinely demonised as an evil paedophile in the UK press, and has as of this writing just earned a prison sentence for his activity?

I do not wish to condone Glitter's actions, but... maybe if, like Wyman, he had played with a multi-squillion-selling band in the all-important 1960s, he'd be treated rather more leniently? 217.155.20.163 23:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just because they started a relationship when she was 13, doesn't mean they had sex when she was 13. While as Gary Glitter was found with an assortment of child pornography.Mustang6172 02:56, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

QUESTION: Did Stephen actually marry Mandy's mother? According to VH1's documentary of the Rolling Stones, the two were engaged, but not actually married.

WhatEVER. Please remember this is a small aspect of Wyman's overall life. Think! Jerry Lee Lewis, Waddy Wachtel, all people just off the top of my head that don't follow that country's "laws". If he lived in West Africa and was a Muslim with two wives and an engagement to a 6 year old girl, nobody would blink an eye. See!!! Now you have me spending far too much time about this; the POINT is that this is an encyclopedia, not a discussion forum or tabloid.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 13:59, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, Stephen did not actually marry Mandy's mother, whose idea it was. This came as a mighty relief to Bill, who was dreading the prospect of becoming his son's son-in-law. 81.157.67.187 (talk) 21:45, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Birth location[edit]

When Bill Wyman was born, Penge was in Kent (not in London as it is now) so I have changed it back to Kent as it appeared on previous versions.

Just to confuse matters further, I have also read [1] that he spent his first few years in neighbouring Sydenham and was evacuated during the war although he certainly spent much of his childhood living in Penge. --Vincej 14:36, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just for the record: I have improved the accuracy of the first sentence to reflect that Bill Wyman was actually born in a nearby hospital in Lewisham and may have spent a few years in neighbouring Sydenham before moving to Penge. --Vince 09:03, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article needs to be expanded. It just doesn't say much about the man.

Expansion from an ex local but only about the family and locality

The Perks family from about 1947 lived in Blenheim Road off Maple Rd Penge Kent. Bill passed the scholarship and was admitted to Beckenham & Penge Grammar School. The whole family was bright and a younger brother also passed the scholarship in 1950 whilst at the Malcolm Primary and would have followed the older brother to the "Grammar" but told me his father forbad it because of the expense and the problems the younger brother would suffer wearing the uniform and cap and returning to Blenheim Rd. Scout uniform was acceptable because there was no snobbery with being a scout. I was in the same year at Malcolm as the younger brother. I also went to the Grammar 1951-1959 and used to see the Perks family in the area. The Grammar are very proud Bill Wyman claims to be an Old Boy. His father, as a Penge bricklayer, worked frequently on Council jobs with Albert Crosskey, a carpenter, from 10 Pelham Rd, whose two sons also went to the "Grammar." The older, Rex, went into the record business and the younger, Fred was a Croydon Solicitor.

Bill Wyman might have become a record producer or master bookmaker but would not have needed to assume another name.

These notes are written by someone who became an Insurance underwiter and is now in retirement writing history in the East Midlands.

I was a student at the B&P C Grammar shortly after "Bill". It was generally believed that he was the on;y person ever expelled. Apparent;y he moved onto a flat opposite the school so that he could look down on it. The flat in question (above Cummings the optician)was featured in a Windolene TV ad. This could be untrue but that was what was "common knowledge" in the school. Bebofpenge (talk) 15:25, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

National Service addition[edit]

thanks for the additional details, but i'm transplanting the new bit here for the time being, in order to discuss some issues with it:

===National Service===
Bill was called up for national service in the RAF in January 1955 and reported to RAF Cardington for about 10 days – then was posted to RAF Padgate for 8 week’s basic training – which was a nightmare he recalled.
His Service number was: 2745787 - From there he was posted to RAF Credenhill near Hereford for Trade Training, & passed out as a Clerk Progress (maths, graphs, statistics etc)
In the autumn, after signing for an extra year (for more benefits & better treatment) he was posted to RAF Oldenburg in North Germany (BFPO 40), where he spent the rest of his service in the Motor Transport Section
The camp was comprised of 3 Hawker Hunter squadrons - 23 Squadron, 26 Squadron & 33 Squadron, & included 1,000 RAF Regiment members – the whole camp comprised 4,000 military personnel The camp was on a 4-hour (evacuate the camp) alert for most of the time he was there, being only 100 miles from the Russian border The Suez Crisis occurred while he was on leave in England, & was obliged to return to base immediately
It was here that he heard the beginnings of Rock ‘n’ Roll on AFN Radio (American Forces Network), & took up guitar playing for the first time
In 1957 he formed a skiffle group on camp and was demobbed in January 1958

the main issues i see with this material are: a] there are no sources cited; and b] this section can't simply be inserted in the middle of the "musical career" section – it necessitates restructuring the article. that might be okay, if the necessary sources can be cited and if this much detail about his RAF service is really warranted ... but is it? i hope other editors will chime in with their views. thanks Sssoul (talk) 18:12, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Children[edit]

While it refers to "Wyman's first marriage to wife Dianne, prior to his involvement with the Rolling Stones, produced his only known child, Stephen Paul Wyman". However, it later states that "In April 1993 he married Suzanne Accosta. They are still married and have three daughters". As it stands, the two statements are not compatible. Are the three daughters not his, or should the statement about Stephen be 'his only known son', or should it be "Wyman's first marriage to wife Dianne produced his only known child prior to his involvement with the Rolling Stones, Stephen Paul Wyman"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.197.219.87 (talk) 11:37, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable source for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14 year old (Mandy Smith) and his son's relationship with Mandy's mother[edit]

Here is a reliable source for for Wyman's sex with a 14 year old (Mandy Smith) and his son's relationship with Mandy's mother. Will someone please add it in? I'm about to go to sleep. Bill the Cat 7 (talk) 07:10, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP:DAILYMAIL indicates that your "reliable source" is dubious at best. 66.210.249.135 (talk) 22:09, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Walking style and influence of Ricky Fenson (citation needed)[edit]

I just added this reference to Ricky_Fenson's page; see "Rick Brown's memories of the Cyril Davies All Stars and more ..." and in there there's great history of Fenson ("He also pitched in with the Rolling Stones and played with the Brian Auger Trinity and Steampacket.") as well as quote of Wyman, all connected to walking bass style and influence. --BenTremblay (talk) 21:09, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Truly surprised[edit]

I can't believe Wymnan's article thus far ranked a C-level in it's progress for the guitar group. There's barely enough there for a Stub article. Please! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:03, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stones in concert 1975 photo WTF?????[edit]

Could anyone please explain why in an article about Bill Wyman, there is a photo of the Stones in concert, with Mick, Ronnie and Keith but NO BILL WYMAN???? WTF??? There is a picture later in the article of just Bill, presumably from the same concert tour, however. In the back of my mind, I can't help but think that someone is being petty, and taking a backhand swipe at Bill since he's not with the Stones any more. Even if I am way off base, and being paranoid, it is definitely a faux pas, to have a picture of a band performing in an article about one of the members, and excluding the member the article is about! Does anyone know the meaning of the word "DUH"?? (Possibly my favorite quote from a movie!!) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gl1200phil (talkcontribs) 08:27, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unused sources belong here, not external links[edit]

These sources do not ever belong in External links. I have moved the link farm there to this talk page where they do belong. Warning: I didn't check them over, so be careful in choosing any references here. Thank you! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 10:08, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the same Bill Wyman?[edit]

http://nymag.com/author/bill%20wyman/

or a different one? Worth a disambiguation if this is someone born Bill Wyman rather than a stage name?

EDLIS Café 21:02, 29 July 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by EdRicardo (talkcontribs)

They are two different people - Bill Wyman the music journalist was born Bill Wyman in 1961 , while the musician was born William Perks before changing his name in 1963. The musician then sent a legal order to the journalist to try to force him to change his name for professional purposes or issue a disclaimer stating that he was a different person, eventually the matter was settled legally and the Journalist is allowed to call himself Bill Wyman - reference = https://www.sfgate.com/politics/joegarofoli/article/Can-Bill-Wyman-be-Bill-Wyman-No-says-Bill-Wyman-2715728.php and https://www.nme.com/news/music/the-rolling-stones-539-1370412

Rumor?[edit]

  • Is it true Bill's mother-in-law from his second marriage became his daughter-in-law when she married Bill's son from his first wife? --Meteor — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.110.195.254 (talk) 20:28, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Books?[edit]

The article says he's published seven books, but the bibliography contains only six. Either a correction or an addition is needed. --Pfold (talk) 14:05, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Although it definitely helps in an international project such as Wikipedia, it's vanishingly unlikely that Wyman was actually ever William Perks "jr" since that's not a formulation used in the U.K.; this makes it a little conspicuous in the emphasis placed upon his "jr" and father's "sr", since it would, for example, never have been on his birth certificate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.109.206.191 (talk) 03:18, 19 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's perhaps worth also observing that in biographical sources in Google Books and elsewhere, the ones making the "jr"/ "sr" distinction in as many words are of American authorship, with many simply giving "William George Perks" son of "William and Kathleen Perks" (she noted in several sources to be "known as Molly") — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.109.206.191 (talk) 03:21, 19 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
