"Egalitarian"[edit]

A couple of editors have objected to the phrase "egalitarian" in the description of this synagogue. The synagogue describes itself this way, as "an egalitarian congregation in which men and women participate equally in the ritual and spiritual life of the synagogue community". Egalitarian has a specific meaning in Conservative Judaism - it means that women and men have equal and identical roles in all religious rituals. This was not the case for any Conservative synagogues 40 years ago, and is still not the case for many. Can people who object to the term explain why? egalitarian is not a branch of the conservative movement. the way you phrased it indicates it is a branch of the conservative movement. the description of egalitarian would belong further in the article but most certainly not in the opening line. i dont see any other synagogue article that describes it that way. also, i think a super vast majority of conservative movement synagogues are fully egalitarian, but that's besides the point. 140.247.141.165 (talk) 00:49, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have severed the term "egalitarian" from the word "conservative". Their coterminous relationship simply fed this controversy, and leads to needless disputation. They can coexist, but need not be displayed next to one another. hello all! Rabbi Robert Dobrusin was the Rabbi at Beth Israel for over 30 years, but I cannot add him nor his accomplishments to the page until I can find an article noting when he joined.
