The two larrikin soldiers?[edit]

Alex Gurney's two larrikin soldiers were 'Bluey and Curly', and the strip first appeared in 'Smith's Weekly' during WWII. The strip continued with the two men as civilians, in a variety of jobs and settings. Ben Bowyang is a tall, craggy farmer from Gunn's Gully, and his bearded, barrel-shaped side-kick is Ben Smith. The character was indeed created by C.J. Dennis, but Gurney was only one of several artists during the long life of the strip, which since 1969 was drawn by Peter 'G'Day' Russell-Clarke. Also during the 1940s by someone called 'McRae'.
