Contrary to what this article says, the "Barnett-Chao" writing system was not used in Chao's Cantonese Primer[1]. Chao used his own writing system in that book. Barnett later [2] suggested modifications to Chao's system, but of course these did not affect Chao's (already published) Cantonese Primer (1947).
I am not familiar with Barnett's modification, but the writing system as described in this article is inconsistent with the one used in Cantonese Primer. E.g., "ng" in even tone becomes just "g" in rising tone or just "q" in going tone, but never "nq", although this does happen in the Gwoyeu Romatzyh system for Mandarin's fourth tone.
