Route Description[edit]

It seems to me that this section, before the state x state descriptions start, should include an explicit statement that the Bankhead name pre-dates all US and most state route numbers, and thus the descriptions given are modern approximations and would be gibberish to a traveler of the original auto trail.

This is not to say that the state x states are faulty. It just seems to me that a reader who is unclear about what an auto trail is vs what a US or state highway is might not grasp the important fact that the Bankhead Highway came long before, for instance, US Highway 78, and that the route of 78, like other highways mentioned, is sometimes so far removed from the original Bankhead that, for hundreds of miles, one might not even catch a glimpse of it from the modern route as described. Quality and importance[edit]

The current article seems well beyond stub status, and should be promoted to Start status. It needs a history section and some images, but exits and junctions are kind of meaningless for a pre-1926 highway. Also, the criteria for importance for auto trails needs to be different from modern road systems. Those criteria need to be discussed in the auto trails project page. I would suggest here that any auto trails shown on maps of the entire USA by Rand McNally should be at least high importance. Certain routes in that set that were the major named transcontinental trails should be given top importance.
