Novel or novella?[edit]

I have checked here, and it seems the text is about 31,700 words long, over 161,300 characters (about 190,000 with spaces).

The story was written in 1856, and at the time it was considered a "conte", a long tale or a short novel.

Maybe it should be considered a novella after all?

Well, it is a hundred pages long in my paperback edition. In French we would never call it a "roman" (which stands for "novel" in French, I know, this is confusing). Plus the French version of this article describes it as a "nouvelle" (short story, again, confusing). How about calling it a novella, a roman court?

Today a short story is often defined as a story less than 7,500 words. A novelette is between 7,500 and 17,499 words. A novella between 17,500 and 39,999 words. With 31,700 words, the story is a longish novella.

How about moving it to "Avatar (novella by Théophile Gautier)"?
