Efficiency, ring configuration questions[edit]

Some questions should be answered:

  • Austin transformers have no iron core, while other types for 50/60 Hz AC have. How big is their efficiency?
  • Some types of Austin transformers consist of rings in an angle of 90 degree ( like [1] or [2] this is obviously the most common design, others not ( picture on http://www.hawkins.pair.com/nss.shtml ). Why look they so different?

Full-load efficiency (Austin ring transformers are always operated at full load) is about 90%.

See http://www.austin-insulators.com/radio/xfmr-hist.html

(There is a lot of info on the above website that could be used to improve this Wikipedia article. Anyone want to give it a shot? If not I will do it when I get time.)

Full-load efficiency of ferrous-core transformers ranges from awful to 99%.

See http://www.copper.org/applications/electrical/energy/trans_efficiency.html

As for why the transformer shown looks so different, keep in mind that it is serial Number 001 -- I would guess that they improved he design later.
