Untitled[edit]

I've added references to the Gatschet and Swanton dictionary of Atakapa and to the Swanton "sketch" of the language.

You'd think we could find some descendants of Atakapa people in Southeast Texas or Southwest Louisiana. The distinctive surname "Reon" seems to have been associated with Atakapa people. Any of them around? My own guess is that "Reon" is actually "Ryan," pronounced in French or Spanish and then re-transcribed in English.

St. Martinville versus Franklin[edit]

The article says that "Saint Martinville" is now "Franklin." I'm not sure what was intended, but "Saint Martinville" (St. Martinville) and "Franklin" are two separate towns in the same area of south Louisiana. Or, is the article implying that the town now known as "Franklin" used to be called "Saint Martinville," and that the present-day "St. Martinville" is a separate town? (I doubt that this would be correct.) Famspear 13:36, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Number of dialects[edit]

The geographic variation section lists two dialects and claims that one was the most divergent of the three. I would guess that what the section is meant to say is that the Eastern dialect is much more divergent from the Western dialect than the one that Swanston claims is an additional dialect is, and that the comparative lack of divergence from the Western dialect contributes to the lack of evidence against Swanston's claim that the Béranger vocabulary was an additional Akokisa dialect, but I don't know anything about Atakapa, so I don't want to make any changes. As currently written, this section does not make sense to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Austinfeller (talkcontribs) 01:54, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Needs to concentrate on the language, there is separate article about the people[edit]

This article is supposed to be about the Atakapa language. However, much of the material is about the Atakapa and their history. There is a separate article about the Atakapa people. I suggest that much of it be deleted from this article. What to others think? Pete unseth (talk) 14:00, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
