Etymology of Ardabil[edit]

Please don't mock the culture of ancient Iran, what someone, who knows nothing about Avesta, Avestan geography, Avestan language, ..., says shouldn't be used as a source. --MojtabaShahmiri (talk) 11:02, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Iranica[edit]

@95.178.192.84: I realize I may have acted a bit too fast on this one. However, it's not easy to maintain WP:GOODFAITH when you see someone edit warring and posting no edit summaries (except the recent one u just made). I was the one who added that piece of information using Iranica [1] ("Because of its proximity to the Caucasus and to the frontier of the Dār-al-ḥarb, Ardabīl was always vulnerable to incursions by the Caucasian mountain peoples and by the steppe dwellers of South Russia beyond the mountains."), however I realize that using "Russia" for this time period may be a bit anachronistic. What are your suggestions? HistoryofIran (talk) 12:47, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks for the humane answer. I do minor edits, so I lost the habit to write something in the edit summary. As for following edit, I thought Aaron was a mod here or something and had it covered. The consensus we reached on his talk page was "plains of Northern Caucasus" - my problem wasn't just the anachronism, but the fact South(ern) Russia is not a (transboundary) natural/geographic region, but a region containing mountains and deserts too. I am a teacher and i like giving my students deeper knowledge and always make connections between peoples and their habitats. You can't talk about eg Cimmerians without talking about the steppe, which is their way of life. I often make this type of edits, and in this context, where mountain raiders and steppe raiders are specifically named, i find it is very important to name these natural regions they come from - the Caucasus and the Pontic-Caspian steppe. The latter term is, i think, only in recent times been agreed upon by the academia, so we often have inadequate terms like South Russia still even in scholarly texts. Aaron's stance was also that P-C steppe covers area outside of Southern Russia, which i don't think the source was claiming, but my compromise was to then name just the plains immediatelly to the north of the mountains. Which is not ideal, because when people see "Northern Caucasus", they think of the mountains, and not of the Caucasus region, which includes steppes 95.178.192.84 (talk) 13:21, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

== plains north of Caucasus

Consensus on making the source text more accurate was reached here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Aaron_Liu#Ardabil. I don't really care anymore anywhere, I'm writing here because is see false accusation of edit warring stepped up into sockpuppetry accusations. My IP changes, I've been editing irregularly for 15 years, very irregularly for the same reason as why i don't have an account - this kind of behaviour by senior editors who discourage me every time i get a few edits in and think i might get an account, but then a smallest edits gets you revert warring, accusations and...personnal issues. Link to consensus was provided in my last edit summary. and still it was too much to take time to find it, instead of dismissing it callously (incl. deleting my response on talk page, rather than admitting error that there was consensus). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.178.192.84 (talk) 12:56, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude when I reverted you in my talk page, it's just that it's much more practical for it be on the talk page of the relevant article. I somehow missed the agreement you two ultimately reached. So that's on me. I have reverted myself. Bests. --HistoryofIran (talk) 13:29, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
