An armed guard who was on regular duty in the school at the time of the shooting heard the shots, ran to where the sound of the shooting was, and pointed his gun at Pierson. Pierson then shot and killed himself. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson later said of the armed guard's actions: "We believe that that action was absolutely critical to the fact that we didn’t have more deaths and injuries."[1]
