Council flat allocation allegations[edit]

It would be helpful if editors could engage in discussion about the phrasing and content of this re-named section, rather than trying to remove it its entirety. There are numerous reliable sources available that discuss this matter. Edwardx (talk) 11:23, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Childless[edit]

"Begum, who is childless, ..." then next para: "She does not have any children". Does it really need mentioning twice? 86.191.247.118 (talk) 08:56, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No it doesn't; thanks for pointing it out. I've removed the first mention. (I'm not even sure we need to mention it once. It's not so much a fact about Begum as an absence of a fact.) — Bilorv (talk) 15:48, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ex-husband[edit]

It would be interesting to know who her ex-husband is, given that he is an elected councillor in Tower Hamlets. At present, I can't find out his name. Perhaps it will be revealed during the trial.--TrottieTrue (talk) 00:31, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:BLPPRIMARY: Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person (emphasis not mine). — Bilorv (talk) 00:42, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn’t intending to, but it will probably then be reported in the press anyway. TrottieTrue (talk) 10:32, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Housing issue[edit]

We seem to go into an excess of detail regarding the housing allegations. Is it really necessary? We don't usually do blow-by-blow accounts of court cases, and then there is NOTNEWS. - Sitush (talk) 07:58, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, I am aware that my removal of overcites has broken some refs. It's an absolute pain fixing them using mobile but there is a bot that does the rounds & will sort it out. - Sitush (talk) 08:21, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have just removed a bit of stuff added since my post above. We need less, not more, in this section and I don't think "he said, she said" mudslinging, opinion and commentary sheds any great light for the reader. - Sitush (talk) 10:20, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Begum[edit]

People reading this article could get the idea that "Begum" is a surname, but it's not in any usual sense. It's a female honorific which can be translated "Lady", "Ms.", "Mrs." etc in various contexts... AnonMoos (talk) 21:58, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What reliable sources or alteration to the prose could improve the article? -- Bilorv (talk) 22:19, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any extra information on her personally, but look at article Begum (as well as the fact that according to this article, she doesn't have the same surname as her father). AnonMoos (talk) 01:11, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping for a bit more information than this. I have no information about these naming conventions--for all I know, it's like the common surname "King" (derived from a title). If Apsana Begum should still be referred to as "Begum" in formal English then I can't think of how the article can be improved. -- Bilorv (talk) 10:39, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have the specific personal information on her that you think is necessary, but the analogy to someone with a surname of "King" is not too helpful, since a man with "Begum" in his name would probably cause eyebrows to be raised over large areas of the Subcontinent and Central Asia, while we can see from this article that her father does not have "Begum" in his name... AnonMoos (talk) 07:09, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is her name. Period. She uses it everywhere, all reliable sources refer to her as Begum. Therefore the article uses it. A more helpful analogy may be the journalist Anita Rani. Rani is a Hindu word for queen or princess. No eyebrows are raised when people have Rani as a surname or a given name. It's quite common. As is the use of Begum as a surname or given name. It's perfectly OK if you know nothing and care nothing about Asian honorifics, but in that case stop making stuff up about things that you know nothing about! This conversation could have ended several rounds ago, except for you making stuff up (your "King" surname analogy is useless and irrelevant, whether in English or in Hindi). AnonMoos (talk) 03:17, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If "Begum" isn't Apsana's official surname in the UK, what is it?
I am sure you know that other surnames which are titles exist in the western world, besides King. E.g. Prince... Dori1951 (talk) 13:42, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She appeared on the ballot paper, and was elected to Parliament, as Aspana Begum.[1] That should be sufficient for us. RolandR (talk) 17:01, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
