sources for Syrian[edit]

I have two sources saying he is Syrian.

The second book says only that he was of "Syrian origin", which is partly true. In fact, it was Anwar's father that was of Syrian origin. The father's textile merchant family had moved from Halab to Cairo in the 19th Century when Cairenes and Halabis, were all citizens of one state, the Ottaman state, according to the Ottoman Law of 1869. Anwar's mother was native Egyptian. Anwar was born in Cairo and held no other citizenship but Egyptian. Anwar cannot be identified as Syrian; the first source is in error. Bias[edit]

According to WP policy, "Neutrality requires views to be represented without bias. All editors and all sources have biases (in other words, all editors and all sources have a point of view)—what matters is how we combine them to create a neutral article. Unbiased writing is the fair, analytical description of all relevant sides of a debate, including the mutual perspectives and the published evidence. Editorial bias toward one particular point of view should be removed or repaired.[1]" The one source that claims that Anwar Wagdi was or Syrian origin is clearly biased. Admin CactusWriter has told User Supreme Deliciousness, "Persisting in constant reversions suggests intractability and antagonizing behavior. I haven't determined whether you are actually anti-Egyptian or just determined to add the word Syrian into every article whether its appropriate, but I do note that you seem to be in edit wars on most every article in which you are involved. ...I'm certain you know that would antagonize him. ...And stop trying to insert Syrian into biographies simply because somebody's grandfather was Syrian -- it's trivial."

Therefore, suggesting that Anwar Wagdi is of Syrian origin is not only trivial, biased, antagonizing, but also false. It is scientifically inaccurate to call someone of Syrian origin simply because somebody's grandfather was Syrian." This post doesn't make any sense. Its not Anwars grandfather that is of Syrian descent but Anwar himself, and so far there is no other source saying that he isn't: "Dream makers on the Nile: a portrait of Egyptian cinema‎" "Anwar Wagdi (1904-1955) Anwar Wagdi was of Syrian origin" http://books.google.com/books?q=anwar+wagdi+syria&btnG=Search+Books and whether it is him, his father or grandfather, that would make him of Syrian descent, therefor the category Egyptians of Syrian descent belongs in this article. Anwar Wagdy is not 25% of Syrian descent, the only sources available says he is of Syrian descent. And it doesn't matter if its 50% or 25%, its still a descent.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 16:26, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The sources cited here and in the article do indicate that Anwar Wagdi has been identified as "Egyptian" by some, "Syrian" by others, or of "Syrian origin". The right question is "When is it appropraite according to Wikipedia rules to label a person of a certain descent"? Admin Sancho has stated the rule on this matter. He stated: "SD, avoid original research. Even the leap from "Sharif's parents were Lebanese", to "Sharif is of Lebanese descent" is going too far in an article about a living person." So, even if the parents were of a different citizenship, calling the person of that descent would be a leap unacceptable in Wikipedia. At least one of Anwar Wagdy's parents was Egyptian citizens and he was born and lived all his life in Egypt. We don't know for sure if it was his father or grandfather who had immigrated to Egypt, so no, he was not of Syrian descent. There is not enough evidence to support this. It is important to ask the correct question and give answers that are in line with Wikipedia rules and not personal opinions. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 12:16, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
