When Did She Move to Australia?[edit]

I understood Anna Russell lived at 1 Anna Russell Way in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was definitely living there in the late 80's and early 90's. Come to think of it, she was featured in a Canadian documentary & telecourse series on death and dying, that was produced only a few years ago. It's frequently shown as part of thanalogy telecourses on American PBS stations. She was still living in Canada at that time.

So, when did she move to New South Wales? Does she actually live in both places -- e.g., Canada in the summer, and then going down to Australia when winter hits the northern hemisphere? 172.193.234.63 11:25, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know when she moved there, but she was definitely residing there recently. I just heard a report that she has passed away. Can anyone confirm this? -- Ssilvers 03:18, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updates of 20 Oct 2006; Born in Canada or England?[edit]

  • This update incorporated material from NY Times obit
  • Added info to film and book lists, and added/moved citations to references
  • NY Times citation documents London, Ontario, not UK birthplace
  • Added quotes and trivia section
  • cut link to BBC, as it was dead; cache was only to Amazon Canada link noted in article (filmography)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by JoanR (talkcontribs).

The Daily telegraphy reports in her obituary that she was born in Maida Vale, London, England. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=&xml=/news/2006/10/21/db2101.xml

Hmm... I have sent email to NY Times requesting clarification

I see the Toronto Star also reports she was born in London, Ontario and grew up in London, England. The NY Times articles says not only that she was born in Ontario but that she later claimed to have been born in England, which may explain why other sources say that. If anyone has her autobiography (or can get it from the library) that may shed light on the question. —Angr 13:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "Russell, Anna" article from The Canadian Encyclopedia-Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, webpage accessed 23 October, 2006 [1] says "naturalized Canadian 1943, naturalized US 1955". This is getting to be almost as much fun as the Ring plot :-). I'm working on some updates off-line (mostly trying to tie data to references) and will incorporate this info. BTW, since a lot of our citations are from newspaper sites and may not be available for long, I'm trying to save copies at home. But I would suggest that footnotes should include descriptions as well as links so we're 'protected' once any links go dead, and future editors with access to archives or hardcopy can find the material. Claims that she was born in Canada: Besides NY Times and Toronto Star, see:

-- Ssilvers 15:51, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite as simple as that. A precedent: Hundreds of US papers such as the Washington Times and Los Angeles Times reported in their obituaries of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf a ludicrous story that she was the aunt of Norman Schwarzkopf and many of these didn't even bother to later issue a correction. The British papers didn't spread that urban myth. In these circumstance, I'd trust those papers that write their obituaries well in advance, rather than those that do things in a hurry. The likelihood is that she was born in Maida Vale, but we'll have to leave it open for the time being. Nunquam Dormio 17:37, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With some reliable sources saying one thing and others saying something else, we shouldn't be taking a stand between the two options. (WP:NPOV applies to this question as well!) There's no reason to believe the British newspapers are more accurate or careful in their reporting than the North American ones. I've restored the version saying that we don't know where she was born. If someone can find a direct quote from AR herself saying where she was born, we can take that as authoritative. Otherwise we should simply report that newspapers disagree on the issue. —Angr 18:05, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A correspondent of mine says that Russell's birth registration shows that she was registered as Ann C. Russell-Brown in the March Quarter of 1912 in the registration district of Paddington, Volume 1a, page 9. The Paddington reg. district includes Maida Vale. Her mother's maiden name was TANDY. How can one cite this information? -- Ssilvers 21:45, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just had a go. Nunquam Dormio 10:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is the birth registration publicly availble anywhere, either online or offline? It would be good if this claim were verifiable. —Angr 12:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opera House[edit]

My favourite piece of Russelliana is from a 1970s album made at the Sydney Opera House. She was talking about the notoriously small orchestral pit, and she said something like "Instead of always building the inside inside the outside, why don't they build the inside outside the outside?". It got a huge laugh then, and still does whenever I revisit it. JackofOz 14:00, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
