Two East German canoe sprint competitors called Anita[edit]

Sports Reference has two entries for Anita Nüßner who were both competing in canoe sprint at the 1968 Summer Olympics:

Anita Kobuß (née Nüßner, born 1944 in Mittweida, D:Q4765565)
Anita Nüßner (listed on the English WP as Anita Nüssner-Kobuss, born 1935 in Plaue, D:Q4765595)

I sense that something's not quite right. I suspect that the woman born in 1935 does not have the name "Kobus" (if so, a WP editor has made a mistake but that may be based on an incorrect source available at that time) and I further suspect that the woman born in 1944 does not have a maiden name of Nüßner (if so, it's incorrect on Sports Reference). Fact is that contemporary East German print media has two Anitas listed for lots of canoe sprint events (so there were two of them; see also this edit summary). Nüßner starts appearing in the media from 1961 onwards and Kobuß is first listed in 1965. For example, they both competed at the East German championships in 1965 with Nüßner listed as competing for SC DHfK Leipzig and Kobuß starting for SC Potsdam. That year, Kobuß won the K-1 500 m championship and Nüßner came second.^[1] What further muddies the waters is the entry for Kobuß in Volker Kluge's book Das große Lexikon der DDR-Sportler where it's stated that she won three medals at the 1966 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.^[2] What's recorded on the WP entry is that Kobuß won one medal, and Nüßner won the other two. @Canadian Paul and MisterSynergy: any thoughts? I agree with your conclusion that there are two different individuals "Anita Kobuß" and "Anita Nüßner".
According to sport-komplett.de, Kobuß won indeed three medals at the 1966 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, while I cannot find any medals for Nüßner that year. The page also states that Nüßner already appeared at the GDR champs in the late 1950s. (Disclaimer: no idea where they have their data from.)
Apart from Wikimedia projects and Sports-Reference, do we have any evidence that either of them also had the surname of the other? Did SR keep sources based on which they created those profiles?

Okay, we have "Nüssner-Kobus" for the 1963 World champs here at www.canoeicf.com and there at sport-komplett.de. That’s all I can find, apart from Wikimedia clones. —MisterSynergy (talk) 00:49, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've started to write a decent bio for Anita Nüssner-Kobuss (or whatever she is called) who was active since the late 1950s. In 1965, Anita Kobuß appears on the scene and wins the national title in K-1 500, with Nüssner-Kobuss coming second. In 1966, Nüssner-Kobuss doesn't compete at all (zero mention in any reporting). Kobuß, on the other hand, is celebrated in the media as having won three medals at the World Champs in Grünau. No scope for confusion as Nüssner-Kobuss is from Leipzig and Kobuß from Potsdam, and their clubs are almost always mentioned. Therefore, the official results lists for 1966 are correct and the WP entry is wrong, as the three 1966 world champ medals belong to Kobuß. Schwede 66 18:00, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Have finished writing up Nüßner's sporting career and moved the article. She wasn't called "Kobuss" during her career and I very much doubt that she was ever called Kobuss. She's still called Anita Nüßner according to various contemporary sources. @Canadian Paul: she's not from Plaue in Thuringia but from Plaue (D:Q15709333) that today is a suburb of Flöha. I'll fix up the article and put a reference in for that.^[3] Schwede 66 21:14, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
