Comment[edit]

Which is correct -- "All work and no play make Jack a very dull boy" or "All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy"? ("make" or "makes")

I have no idea when this question was posted, but in case anyone else was wondering. "Makes" is correct because the last noun in the series (play) is singular. 2602:306:C5C2:5C10:94ED:DDF0:C60:B13E (talk) 07:26, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Appears in Criminal Minds season 1, episode 22, when the character Penelope Garcia's computers get hacked and the message "all work and no play" fills the displays.

removed content[edit]

I have removed the following contribution, which was made in good faith. I removed it because it invites listcruft and it does not improve a reader's understanding of this article's subject.

This proverb is also used in the song "American Dream" by Casting Crowns.

More cruft removed (July 30, 2010) :

  • On one episode of family guy stewie quoted the line "all work and no play makes stewie a dull boy"
  • Another mentioning of the proverb is found in the second story (Araby) of James Joyce's Dubliners.
  • The computer adventure game Oregon Trail II has a character who mentions this while speaking to the player, referring to the long days of travel.
  • The Office has a character, Dwight, who mentions this proverb.
  • The proverb is mentionned by Dean, a character in Supernatural (U.S. TV series), in Supernatural (season 2), episode 7: The Usual Suspects to refer to an overworked lawyer.
  • In the song lyrics "He's a Man" by Madonna, "All work and no play, makes Dick a dull dull boy, career gets in the way." related to Dick Tracy.

  • Removed: "The publishing house Gengotti issued in 2008 the book All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, 128 pages written by Jack Torrance." This is a self-published work of gibberish. Not encyclopedic. Senator2029 | talk | contribs 08:17, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed excessive list[edit]

I WP:BOLDly removed all list entries of occurances of this phrase because they were excessive, unsourced and WP:INDISCRIMINATE . I also removed a long-unsourced and trivial paragraph about a computer virus. I don't mind if someone adds back some of the occurences of this phrase, but plase make it sourced about where, how and why this phrase was uttered. This will be much more helpful for the reader. Everything else is better suited for TV Tropes, IMO. – sgeureka tc 13:03, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
