Purpose of Alfalfa Club? Celebrate General Lee's bithday, or just to have an annual dinner?[edit]

I have seen both stories in many places. The former was claimed recently by President Obama, and earlier by Gov. Palin. I am sure the club prefers to promote the dinner explanation and am very wary of it. Given that the club was founded shortly after the Civil War, within a week or so of Lee's January 19th birthday, and that is is unenlighteded enough not to admit women until 1994, the Lee version seems plausible. On the other hand, I prefer getting it right. Thanks!!
