Trutch's Alleged Conflict[edit]

While the original Alexandra bridge was constructed in 1863, Joseph Trutch sat as a member of the assembly in the separate Colony of Vancouver Island. He did not stand in the election that September, which occurred just days before the bridge's official opening. The following spring he was appointed Surveyor-General for the mainland colony. He was also made Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, an appointment which persisted with mainland and island colonies' merger in 1866. Contrary to claims made by some, Trutch did not hold any office in British Columbia while taking contracts for the Cariboo Road. 24.68.80.249 (talk) 23:23, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
