ALBERT VAN DER SANDT CENTLIVRES (1887-1966). Chief Justice from l950 to l957, was born at Cape Town and educated at the South African College. He was awarded a BA (Hons.) in Classics in l906 and then, on obtaining a Rhodes Scholarship, went to New College, Oxford. Here he obtained a BA (Jurisprudence) in 1909 (Second class) and a BCL in 1910 (Third Class) He was called to the bar by the Middle Temple on 17 November 1910 and commenced practice at the Cape bar in 1911. From 1920 to 1935 he was a Parliamentary draftsman, and in 1927 took silk. In 1935 he became a judge of the Cape Provincial Division and was raised to the Appelate Division in 1939. Oxford awarded him its DCL (honoris causa) in 1953. He was Chancellor of the University of Cape Town from 1951 to 1966. In the opinion of a later Chief Justice, L.C. Steyn, Centlivres was 'well versed in the old authorities [but] his strength lay in the realm of statute law and case law'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idyllic press (talkcontribs) 18:27, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
