Suggestions FEB 2011[edit]

To improve upon this article I suggest adding citations that are in English, as well as repairing the two dead links. Changed to stub class article because of verifiability issues. cReep (talk) 06:51, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

→ Spanish bulldog per WP:USEENGLISH. The book "Canines in Cervantes and Velázquez" refers to the translation of Alano as a bulldog here. William Harristalk 02:58, 5 March 2020 (UTC) Relisting. SITH (talk) 12:41, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support – per move nom. Cavalryman (talk) 05:17, 5 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
  • Support. "Alano" alone seems to be the most common name (as the infobox suggests in "common nicknames"), but since Alano is a disambiguation page, it can't be moved there unless it is clearly the primary topic. "Spanish bulldog" seems the best WP:NATURALDIS. Note Alano espanol and Spanish alano are red. According to this, alanos are not particularly Spanish but only Spanish alanos are called alanos. Now get out of that. 85.238.91.68 (talk) 03:14, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. Spanish Bulldog with caps "B" already redirects there. 85.238.91.68 (talk) 03:23, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful looking dogs in the pix, but I don't believe that website is a WP:RELIABLE source. Thanks for the comment. William Harristalk 10:49, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou for your comments. The proposed move has now been changed from "bulldog" to "Bulldog" as advised. I have now provided 3 reliable secondary sources in the lede of the article rather than one, Google Books provides others, and I believe that your recommendation to do so was wise. A Google search on Spanish Bulldog is also instructive. William Harristalk 06:44, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support It does seem that the Spanish name is somewhat used in English, but not as much as the outright English name, so we should default to that as both COMMONNAME and per WP:USEENGLISH. oknazevad (talk) 14:04, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Quick question (I've not looked at this in detail): which English name, Oknazevad? The proposed name "Spanish Bulldog" seems little used, with (at first glance) "Spanish Alano" somewhat more frequent. What we'd need to see is evidence that one specific English-language name predominates over the actual name of the breed in English-language reliable sources. So far, that evidence has not been provided. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:31, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. According to the Spanish Kennel Club, the official English breed name would be "Spanish Alano". --Canarian (talk) 16:37, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Relisting note: this relist is to gain consensus on alternatives raised in comments and on the differing views regarding capitalisation. SITH (talk) 12:41, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME, and looks like this name is also the most used in English.--Ortizesp (talk) 00:09, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
