Untitled[edit]

I'd like to see more about what Al Gore said he did, how various people reacted to those statements, and (if possible) a comparison between those statements & reactions to what is generally agreed that he really did.

What seems missing are claims / arguments from his political opponents that "took the initiative in creating the Internet" meant - or could be construed to mean - that (a) he thought of the idea of interconnected networks or (b) he got the idea from someone else and championed it, in the sense of getting engineers to start working on it, or (c) he realized that someone (other than him) had the original idea and that engineers were already working on it, but that he ensured that sufficient federal funds and other types of government support would be provided to make what those other guys were working on, a reality.

As opposed to, say, after he found out the Internet had been invented and was already in use, he promoted what had already been created by other men with legislation.

In short, did he mean to say that he promoted something that others had already created (slip of tongue or slight but forgivable exaggeration), or did he really mean he was the one who got it all going in the first place? And what corrections or clarifications did he ever make to straighten out what he really meant? --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:16, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting spin. But in fact all the misleading was done by his opponents, who lyingly claimed that he said that he "invented" the internet, mocked him for that, and never ever gave him credit for the work that he actually did. Explaining that somewhere might be useful, but it really doesn't belong in this article ... its an aspect of how Gore personally was treated in the political arena, and so is about him and not his contributions to information technology, the facts of which are laid out here. -- 98.108.206.28 (talk) 00:15, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Arundel Elementary School says "In 1995, Vice President Al Gore visited the school to give a press conference concerning the implementation of an Internet network in the school. Arundel was the first school in the nation to have such a network." If verified, that info might fit here, in the CA schools section. Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 00:16, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Al Gore and the 2000 Year Conversion Event[edit]

It would be worth to mention that he talked in length about the potential hazard of the 2000 Year Conversion Event, issuing a warning about its danger. (http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/npr/library/speeches/071498.html) This was, obviously, not really well based. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.1.53.75 (talk) 18:26, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gore's words that Y2K "could cause serious problems for commerce and communications all over the world" were pretty much the consensus back then. The President and politicians from both parties were saying the same thing, and in fact a lot of effort was spent ensuring as many computers as possible wouldn't be affected by Y2K. There was a lot of hysteria about Y2K with some people foolishly prophesying apocalyptic scenarios, but the overall concern that Y2K could entail financial problems and software glitches is reasonably "well based." --Ismail (talk) 07:50, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
