Attacked in prison?

According to the wiener apocryphal tale quoted here, Capone and James C. Lucas have a face off and the Mafia boss gets the message that he's dead if he tries to muscle his way around Alcatraz.

BUT if you check the story version that is in the article about James C. Lucas, it says the Texan bank robber simply attacked Capone stabbing him in the back with shears in the laundry.

One has to be fallacious, but which one? mm

You people have to watch this article. Somebody slipped in that he was born in "Palmdale, New York." I don't know how long this hoax has been there. I just happened to wander by this article and I found it. --Jay Tepper (talk) 04:43, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

The loons are back. Now he is born in Brooklyn in one place (correct), "Barrow, New York" in another (nonexistent location), and "Garden City, New York" in the infobox. I changed all to Brooklyn. Only time Capone named as a murder defendant

Al Capone was a Italian-American mobster

Al Capone was a Italian-American mobster so why dose it always say gangster when he was in the mob and the top mob boss head of the chicago crime family

A MOB AND A GANG ARE THE SAME THING MORON!

Well, a mob and a gang aren't actually "the same thing". But, the way in which the terms are used in this article are correct. Dte1898 (talk) 02:42, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

This Wikipedia page sounds as if it was written by a kid?

I'm using this article for a school assignment and it seems as if it was written by a gangster-loving 8th grader who's trying to romance the whole thing. Like is it really necessary to keep using phrases like "show-down" and "muscled his way in" and "the infamous brothers", and making everything sound all dramatic? It's kind of annoying to read. And why does it say "Capone wanted to get married, he was under 21, and his parents had to sign a consent form for their already tough son.. Was the uncle of soon to be mafia leader Jon Ameling.." What? "Already tough". I mean, doesn't it sound as if the person who wrote this thinks Capone is a hotshot and wants to make him sound all romantic? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.188.138.214 (talk) 20:26, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Capone's first imprisonment

Capone's first prison sentence: He was originally sent to Holmesburg Prison (also in Philadelphia) but was transfer to Eastern State in October of 1929 to finish out his sentence, which, in total, was a year. He was arrested while leaving a Philadelphia theater for carrying an unlicensed gun. It is speculation that he arranged to be put in prison to escape fall out from the Valentine's Day Massacre. Capone denied this and spoke to the contrary, citing the large sums of money he spent in legal fees to get out of prison. The source of all of this information is the Eastern State Penitentiary Tour Guide training manual. btkooi —Preceding unsigned comment added by Btkooi (talkcontribs) 02:30, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

If you have a copy of the guide, please add the publication information so it can be used as a citation. Otherwise the photo of Eastern State should be deleted, as the article has no mention of his imprisonment there on any charges. Parkwells (talk) 16:28, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Cicero, IL

The first mention of Cicero in this article is in this sentence:

The 1924 town council elections in Cicero became known as one of the most crooked elections in the Chicago area's long history, with voters threatened at polling stations by thugs.

So for those not familiar with the Chicago area, the question immediately arises, where is Cicero in relation to Chicago, and what does Capone have to do with Cicero? The article on Cicero, Illinois contains this:

Cicero is an incorporated town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. ... Cicero is named for the town of Cicero, New York, which in turn was named for Marcus Tullius Cicero, the Roman statesman and orator.

Originally, Cicero Township occupied six times its current territory. Weak political leadership and town services resulted in cities such as Oak Park and Berwyn voting to split off from Cicero, and other portions such as Austin were annexed into the city of Chicago [1].

Al Capone built his criminal empire in Chicago before moving to Cicero to escape the reach of Chicago police. ...

Cicero has long had a reputation of government scandal. ...

It would seem useful to incorporate some of this information into the Capone article, but I do not have any original references.
Milkunderwood (talk) 21:12, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Without a reference at the Cicero article (which subsequently needs a [citation needed] tag), we shouldn't put it here yet. I've found tons of references for articles by searching the net: I'm sure a reference from a reliable source is out there somewhere. "Teenaged" mugshot

I changed the caption for the mugshot in the article, removing the "teenager" part and moving the photo down in the article, since it serves no purpose in the "early life" section. Quite clearly Capone is not a teenager in the mug shot, and this was possibly inferred from the jpg title and this[4] blog source (not reliable). Another site which sells the image[5] identifies it as being taken at Eastern State Penitentiary. However, Eastern State Penitentiary's official website shows a different mug shot[6], and it is reasonable to assume that this is from the time he was there. The mug in this article is currently up for deletion, and unless it was taken by a Federal law enforcement agency, it may not be a free image. Doc talk 09:33, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Clarification of 'The Outfit'

I think that (1) the term 'The Outfit' should be changed to 'The Chicago Outfit' in much of the article or (2) many instances of 'The Outfit' should direct to the 'Chicago Outfit' link. I was reading the 'Saint Valentine's Day Massacre' portion of the article and was completely confused with what 'The Outfit' referred to and why it was capitalized. I had to look over the previous section and click on 'The Outfit' to understand what it was. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.135.82.175 (talk) 09:33, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Per WP:OVERLINK, we normally don't wikilink the same term repeatedly in an article (#4). Perhaps "The Outfit" should be in quotation marks to clarify things? I'm not sure what the best solution is, and opinions are always welcomed. Doc talk 09:44, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

I still think 'The Outfit' is ambiguous if someone were to only read a specific subheading of the article. More pragmatically, I just found things very confusing when I wanted to quickly skim a few sections of the article. As originally suggested, why not just swap out 'The Outfit' for 'The Chicago Outfit' each time it is referenced in the article? 'The Outfit' only appears five times in the entire article; I believe the change would provide much needed clarification.

I'm not sure what to tell you. OVERLINK seems to assume that your average garden-variety reader would have the sense to understand that "The Outfit" (once linked to "The Chicago Outfit") is the same "Outfit" listed one paragraph below. Or two or three paragraphs below. Anyone else out there to help field this one? Consensus is the best route to resolving issues like this. Doc talk 08:58, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I added the name "The Chicago Outfit" (wikilinked) to the lede as this is/was the name of the crime syndicate which then became known as the Capones. Unbelievably, the Outfit appeared in the article without specifically stating that it was Capone's gang. And also I added a wikilink to the Outfit in the SVDMassacre section as the previous mention is way above, not particularly visible if you haven't read the whole previous section and so on. Should be clearer. CaptainScreebo Parley! 22:03, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your help Screebo.

I still believe that a way to clear up ambiguity and generally enhance this article's readability is to change 'The Outfit' to 'The Chicago Outfit' once per each subheading of the article. I think Doc may have misinterpreted my suggestion. I'm not saying that we should add any more links to 'The Chicago Outfit.' I simply think swapping out the words will provide much needed clarity without violating any Wikipedia guidelines (such as WP:OVERLINK that Doc directed to).

Just to make sure everyone clearly is on the same page with what I'm suggesting, look at the subheading for 'Saint Valentine's Day Massacre' in the Al Capone article:

"It is believed Capone ordered the 1929 Saint Valentine's Day Massacre in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago's North Side. Details of the killing of the seven victims[3] in a garage at 2122 North Clark Street (then the SMC Cartage Co.) and the extent of Capone's involvement are widely disputed. No one was ever brought to trial for the crime. The massacre was thought to be the Outfit's effort to strike back at Bugs Moran's North Side gang. They had been increasingly bold in hijacking the Outfit's booze trucks, assassinating two presidents of the Outfit-controlled Unione Siciliane, and made three assassination attempts on Jack McGurn, a top enforcer of Capone.[citation needed]"

If the average reader scrolls down to just the 'Saint Valentine's Day Massacre' section of the article (as I did), it is quite ambiguous as to what 'the Outfit' refers to. However, if one just substitutes out the first instance of 'The Outfit' with 'The Chicago Outfit' (with no link added), the reader will instantly know what is being talked about.

I submit that this change will only have positive implications. (1) As far as I'm aware it doesn't violate any Wikipedia guidelines. (2) 'The Chicago Outfit' is just as correct name-wise as 'The Outfit' (as they both have the same referent). (3) As there are only 5 instances of 'The Outfit' in the article, I don't feel that changing one instance of 'the Outfit' to 'The Chicago Outfit per sub-section will feel cumbersome or verbose. (4) 'The Chicago Outfit' is just as grammatically correct as 'The Outfit.'

If anyone disagrees, I'd like to hear why. If not, for clarity's sake, please make the change as suggested. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.135.82.175 (talk) 18:38, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Date of birth

The article states that he was born on January 17, 1899. The only source stated for this is a biography, which is a secondary source (fn 4). The 1900 US Census for Brooklyn shows Alphonse Capone, son of Gabriele and Teresa Capone, being born in May of 1898 in New York. Series 623, Roll 1050, page 50. It shows older brothers Vincenzio, born May 1892 in Italy; Raffalo, born Feb 1893 in Italy (this seems too close to Raffalo and may indicate faulty memory on the part of the informant or a faulty entry on the part of the census taker); and Salvatore, born Jan 1896 in New York. The census return shows the family living at 69 Park Avenue, Brooklyn. The best source for a date of birth would be a public birth record, if any. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.179.109.109 (talk) 19:01, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Dubious massive changes made on 5 May 2009 need checking

A great many changes were made by one editor on 4-5 May 2009. I don't know the subject well enough to say anything definitive, but certainly some content which seems relevant and sourced was removed (with its references). A lot of both the old and the new material was unreferenced, which is fairly normal for Wikipedia. Before 06:46, 4 May 2009 the article stood at 38,871 bytes. User:Ghosts&empties made a number of revisions, some interspersed with other users and a large swathe of uninterrupted changes (diff: [9]); the article stood at 27,651 bytes after these changes. A few of the edits had comments. There was some criticism on the user's Talk page in 2006. I don't consider this pure vandalism, but I suggest that anyone interested and knowledgeable have a look and see if anything relevant was deleted beyond the Lucas incident, which I restored. I know this sounds random but I read it in an article and I was unsure whether to add it to the wiki: http://www.tnonline.com/2011/jun/18/milk-expiration-dates-courtesy-al-capone http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:qrbN9uSXPUoJ:www.tnonline.com/2011/jun/18/milk-expiration-dates-courtesy-al-capone+al+capone+milk&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk http://historyengine.richmond.edu/episodes/view/5426 http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=31966

Al Capone's song rendition

"In 2009 his rendition of the song was recorded for the first time in history"? Did they dig him up and find him still able to sing? I think this should read "his transcription" of the song. Francisnikp (talk) 03:08, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Missing portrayal "In Popular Culture: Film and Television"

Louis Giambalvo portrayed Al Capone in the excellent 1981 series, "The Gangster Chronicles",

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gangster_Chronicles .

Though he appears in the cast list in the link above, which is linked both to the article about him and to this article (about Al Capone), the reciprocal reference to his role does not appear here.

Armored Car

The car formally owned by Capone is up for auction. It's also been discovered it was never used by any president of the United States. It was shipped overseas and there remained - it's listed in the news article that the theory is "debunked" that the president ever used it. I'm not sure how to add the link to the story but it's pretty popular news atm I think more or less anyone looking at the internet news columns yahoo/google etc should have seen it. I'm just curious if this proves untrue and has all this wiki links and facts added to it as "proof" how much other info in wiki is completely made up :( — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.169.224.98 (talk) 18:08, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Car used by president?

The cited reference for the information that Capone's car was used by president does not support the claim. Removing from article. 08:30, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Parental origin

His parents, Gabriele (December 12, 1864 – November 14, 1920) and Teresina Capone (December 28, 1867 – November 29, 1952), were immigrants from Italy.

The designation of Italy is too vague in this context. The Kingdom of Italy had only been established in 1861, just years before both Capone's young parents migrated to the USA. The next sentence describes in detail from where in Italy each parent hailed, but most readers will not know that both places of origin are in Campania. In my view, therefore, the current statement of parental origin needs to be amended to read:

His parents, Gabriele (December 12, 1864 – November 14, 1920) and Teresina Capone (December 28, 1867 – November 29, 1952), were immigrants from Campania, Italy.

Soul Eater

I am watching an anime, Soul Eaters, and apparently Al Capone appears as an assassination target in episode two. I don't know if it's worth putting down in the film section, but I figured I'd just mention it here. 98.217.230.157 (talk) 21:40, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Chicago career

Under "Chicago career" the following sentence is not clear, particularly the referent of 'them': "Torrio had gone there to resolve some family problems his cousin's husband was having with the Black Hand and killed them." Zym (talk) 22:42, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Capone's full name

As reported by an Italian newspaper, but also considering his parents' origins, Capone was likely named "Alfonso Gabriele" instead of "Alphonse Gabriel". I don't know whether it can be verified or not, but would make more sense if his original name was Alfonso Gabriele Capone and was then anglicized to Alphonse Gabriel. Also, his mother's surname was Raiola (married Capone, née Raiola). --Triple 8 (talk) 22:07, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Saint Valentine's reference.

I noted that the statement "It is believed that Capone ordered the 1929 Saint Valentine's Day Massacre" was in need of citation. The FBI file attributes it to Capone's gang: [1]. Also Biography.com states "Even though Al Capone was conveniently in Florida, the police and the newspapers knew who had staged the massacre.": <ref>http://www.biography.com/people/al-capone-9237536?page=4</>. Just these 2 sources seem to imply that it was generally assumed at the time the massacre was ordered by Capone. Would someone be able to update the article with this citation. Header Pic Date?

Unless the warden got him all dolled up to take a nice picture whilst serving time on Alcatraz, "circa 1935" date cannot be right. It would be better stated "circa 1932" or "circa 1933". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.39.203.145 (talk) 20:26, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Structure fix: second paragraph

remove "at a young age" in the first sentence of the second paragraph, due to redundancy → "... at the age of 14." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hobobear (talkcontribs) 17:34, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

{{edit semi-protected|<!-- Page to be edited -->|answered=no}} There is an error in the last sentence of the first paragraph under the section Capone's power grows in Chicago. O'Banion was killed by Torrio's men on November 10th, not October 10th.

Al Capone Secret Revealed

It has been found by biologists that traces of dolphin DNA was found in Al Capone. It is believed that Al Capone was a Mermaid King and hid ALL of his treasure and money deep in the ocean. Al Capone only kept a EXTREMELY SMALL amount of his looted objects and money on the surface but called on his Mermaid legions to bring all of his treasure to a underwater cave in the Ocean. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.45.148.149 (talk) 01:44, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
