League titles[edit]

@Hashim-afc: The League of the institutes and the Iraqi premier league are two different competition. Jawiya has won 5 of each and should be presented that way. The Iraqi FA does not recognise the League of the institute as a national league because the participants were restricted. @Alitheboss55: Hello Ali. The League of the Institutes itself wasn't a single competition - you had the Iraq FA Championship that was a group stage, the Iraq FA Cup Championship which was a double elimination tournament, then the Iraq FA League Championship which was round robin. The name League of the Institutes was never actually used until after the Premier League got founded, it wasn't a single competition. That's why I wasn't really comfortable with listing League of the Institutes on its own as it's actually 3 competitions into one. Rather than separating the League of the Institutes into three separate competitions and then having the Iraqi Premier League as well, making four different league competitions in the honours page which is a bit messy, I thought it was much better to have all the league competitions put into one. There is a clear distinction between titles before and after 1974 as it says "League of the Institutes (until 1974) and Iraqi Premier League" so it's easy to see they've won 5 of each (of course we can't list the name of all 4 competitions so we just say League of the Institutes (until 1974)). A similar debate happened between English football editors as the First Division and Premier League are strictly two separate competitions, however as they were both the league championship the consensus to combine them in the honours section was reached, that's why when you see a page like Arsenal F.C., it says "First Division (until 1992) and Premier League" with 13 wins, rather than separating it into 10 First Divisions and 3 Premier Leagues. It looks far neater and makes sense. I see where you're coming from about the IFA not recognising it, but then technically that means we shouldn't include it at all which I think is wrong, especially as the club itself recognises the titles. It's also important to note that not all the pre-1974 seasons were restricted to Baghdad, two seasons included provincial teams. Overall I prefer to have them combined, with the text "League of the Institutes (until 1974) and Iraqi Premier League" so there is a clear and obvious distinction, and I also think it is important to keep this format on all the Iraqi clubs for consistency. @Hashim-afc: Ah I see, I think my issue with it is at first glance it seems to be that Al Jawiya seem like they won 10 national titles when they only won five. However I do see your point, and after a quick look over countries who also had multiple leagues as the first division like Germany it seems to be common that all top league titles are listed in the honours section, so I would agree to keep them.Alitheboss55 (talk) 15:13, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
