I don't know the dance for this event (wikis). I believe that the name: Karma, or Garma, or any of the other terms used to name this town, derive from the fact that at one time or another, it had grapes. Clearly, like places in the US, there are real people here, who have lived and died, and found happiness or despair here. If one looks at the Wikimaps for the area, there are other facts about the area, few of which relate to details of any killings.

If there are references that speak to the activities post-US involvement, they likely deal with people trying to deal with real loss. Many American soldiers and Marines have died in this area. I'm quite sure that many Iraqis have also perished. One wonders about the 'obscenity' of having a page dealing with "nothing but the details of killings".

It strikes one that there are many places on earth for which there is little more than the details of killing. Try going to a number of the concentration camps in Germany or Poland. There are probably many interesting facts about them and the people who live and lived nearby, but, who cares...

On Wikimaps, someone has supplied a number of tags that relate to places in Karma. Nearly all are in Arabic. Hey, I was the lead operations advisor for the Iraqi Army brigade that took over Kharma, Nasser Wa' Salaam, southern Fallujah, etc in 05-06. I see that we were sort of mentioned...but not. I remember all the events noted with Marines while I was there and Fumento was imbed with us. I'd like to add a few things....could quote from my small book that I wrote with the general who was in charge of all of the advisors...but here's the thing, I don't want some choad roll in stating that it's all "original" and delete it. The current commandant, Berger, was our RCT commander and he was the one who decided to put us in and keep Marines on periphery (although we all worked together). Can anyone add any actual information about the place?[edit]

It's obscene to have a page about somewhere with nothing but details of killings.

This page lacks even basic information about al-Karmah as a place; and presumably it was a plce long before the incidents detailed here.

Well, there's a nice marketplace right in the center of town, next to the lollipop (the sign in the intersection looks like a 15-foot-tall lollipop), but it's dangerous to go there, because of the ease of IED emplacement in the burms on the roads leading up to the city center on the end away from OP Delta. There was an ice factory, but it was destroyed by RPG fire years before I got there, and there's a leather-tanning factory just outside the city that smells like hell every time you drive past it. There was a police station about a klick away from Camp Delta, but tanks had to blow it all to hell when the Army ran away after they got shot at while they were watching it. Hm, interesting... I was a member of the last army unit in the city and was involved in the handover of that police station. Our unit was thrown around the country for contingency operations, basically, because we were the only parachute infantry unit in-country at the time. The Marines were severely undermanned, so we took over Karmah, and most of the violence had subsided by the time we made the handover, though I do know the next unit suffered fatalities right after the handover (which is typical right after handovers). Believe it or not, we held it the entire time. The Marine Corps. unit later decided it was not worth defending, especially because it was surrounded by tall buildings with great visibility inside the OP. No one really blamed them. It seemed to us, at times, to be indefensible. Much of it was destroyed during one of the larger coordinated attacks against us, when a dumptruck VBIED hit the ECP. I spent seven months in 2007-2008 living in a morgue just north of town called "OP Omar". I agree with 24.5.43.187, that place was a hellhole in general and no one can be blamed if they "ran away" from a few locations. As I recall, the whole MNC-I mission in Iraq for 2006 was "run away", i.e. transfer as many locations over to the Iraqis as possible, regardless of their significance. That was the context in which the Army units (think it was the 101st) were rapidly drawing down then, and the Surge in the spring of 2007 was the context in which the Marine units came back.
