This page is full of mis-information and requires a tidying. It has none of the appropriate templates or tags or whatever they are called. For example, if this is true it has no sources.

Abstinence from sexual activity results in a build-up of hormones, correlated with a feeling of well-being.

This article seems to contradict what is said in the abstinence article, never mind common sense and experience. Piridium 23:09, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article violates NPOV[edit]

"Abstinence may arise from an ascetic element, present in most religions, or from a subjective need for spiritual discipline. In its religious context, abstinence is meant to elevate the believer beyond the normal life of desire, to a chosen ideal, by following a path of renunciation."

The above paragraph is rife with slanted language, italicized. It should be replaced with more neutral language.

Pre marital abstinence[edit]

Why does the article state PMA to be forbidden only in Islam? It is forbidden in Christianity and Judaism too! Is there a reason it hasn't been added? --Cameron (t|p|c) 20:36, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you believe these authorities emphasize abstinence as well as sobriety? Thia is a question that I have been asked by an instructor, I am not sure what he is asking for. I believe that it takes abstinence to maintain sobriety. Also that sobriety means not only abstaining but also changing ones thinking and behavior patterns. I do know that some people in the substance abuse treatment realm view sobriety as no necessarily abstaining but not overindulging. As an alcoholic I know that its an all or none process. It is not something that can be limited forever. Could you please help me to figure out what he is looking for? My being accepted for an internship is dependent on this question. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.117.46.19 (talk) 02:13, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Many Christians (as well as other religions) prohibit pre-marital sex as well."[edit]

Actually, all of Christianity officially forbids premarital sex. Some denominations have worse problems with individuals ignoring the precept than others, but all have this precept which was taught by Jesus Christ himself. As a devout Christian myself, I would know this. The Mysterious El Willstro (talk) 06:56, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Abstinence Misinterpretation[edit]

Abstinence doesn't only have sexual interpretations, it also has many other uses. The word abstinence is also used in the definition of an "Offer" in the Indian contract act 1872, http://www.indiankanoon.org/doc/420719/. This article shouldn't just have sexual interpretation as it may send in a wrong impression for those who are unaware of the meaning of the word.
